Shield male (male fern), Dryopteris filix-mas (L.) Schott. Botanical description, habitat and habitats, chemical composition, use in medicine and industry

Shield male (male fern)

Perennial spore plant of the centipede family (Polypodiaceae).

The rhizome is powerful, oblique, with remnants of leaf petioles from previous years and thin rusty-brown membranous scales.

The leaves are large, up to 1,2 m long, 25 cm wide, oblong-elliptical in outline, doubly pinnately dissected. On the underside of the leaf are clusters of sporangia (sori) covered with a kidney-shaped veil.

Range and habitats. The plant is common in the European part of Russia, the Far East, the Caucasus, Altai, Tien Shan and the Sayan Mountains.

Chemical composition. All parts of the plant contain phenolic compounds and anthocyanins. Rhizomes, in addition, are triterpenoids, B vitamins, tannins (7-8%), higher aliphatic alcohols and higher fatty acids. Essential oil (0,144%), vitamin C, flavonoids, higher fatty acids, including linoleic, palmitic, oleic, linolenic, stearic acids were found in the leaves; lipids.

Application in medicine. Preparations from the rhizome of the fern are used against tapeworms. Fern preparations are especially effective for infestations with bovine and porcine tapeworms (teniidoses), as well as for diphyllobothriasis and hymenolepiasis.

An extract from the rhizomes of the male fern and the drug filiksan are used - the sum of the active ingredients of the rhizomes of the male fern.

Dense male fern extract (Extractum filicis maris spissum) (B). Extraction with ether of the active substances of the rhizome of the plant. Thick, inactive mass of green or brown-green color, unpleasant odor. A completely browned extract is not allowed for use.

Shield male (male fern)

With teniidosis, treatment is carried out in 2 stages. The first stage is the preparation of the patient 1-2 days before taking an antihelminthic, the patient is recommended food with a small amount of fat (white bread, crackers, milk, kefir, yogurt, milk cereal liquid cereals, cereal soups, fresh fish, various jelly).

On the eve of treatment in the evening, instead of dinner, they give a glass of sweet tea with a small amount of crackers, and a saline laxative is prescribed for the night. Castor oil is contraindicated (it is believed that when castor oil is combined with fern acid, it is absorbed into the blood faster). On the day of treatment in the morning, the patient is prescribed a cleansing enema, and then they give an extract of the male fern, 1 capsule every 3 minutes (drink with water) for 30 minutes. For children 2-3 years old, the entire dose of the extract is given with honey, jam or sugar in 2 doses with a break of 15-20 minutes. 30 minutes after taking the last dose of the extract, a saline laxative is prescribed. After 1,5-2 hours, the patient is given a light breakfast.

Usually the worms come out 2-3 hours after taking a laxative. If after 3 hours after taking a laxative stool, an enema is prescribed. It is necessary to ensure that the parasite comes out with the head; if the parasite comes out without a head, an additional 2-3 enemas are prescribed.

Treatment for invasion with a wide tapeworm (diphyllobothriasis) is carried out in the same way as for taeniasis.

Treatment of hymenolepiasis with fern extract is carried out in cycles with a 7-day break between each of the three cycles. Each cycle consists of 2 days of preparation of the patient and 1 day of taking the drug.

Preparing the patient for treatment is reduced to the same diet as in the treatment of teniidoses; in the evening on the eve of taking the antihelminthic drug, a laxative is given. In an enema, 20 minutes after it, fern extract is given on an empty stomach.

Other uses. The extract from autumn leaves is suitable for stimulating the reproduction of yeast during their production.

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>
