Moldavian snakehead, Dracocephalum moldavica L. Botanical description, distribution, chemical composition, features of use.

Moldovan snake-head

Lamiaceae family - Lamiaceae.

Annual plant.

The stem is straight, shortly pubescent, branched from the base, with long branches directed obliquely upwards, 15-50 cm high. Leaves on short petioles, oblong-ovate or oblong-lanceolate, blunt-toothed at the edges.

Flowers on short stalks in six-flowered false whorls. Bracts oblong-wedge-shaped. Calyx short-haired, two-lipped; corolla 20-25 mm long, white or bluish-violet, pubescent outside. The fruit is a trihedral nut.

Blooms in July - August.

It is bred in gardens as a honey plant and an essential oil plant, mainly in the southern regions.

It is found in Ukraine, Belarus, Central Asia, Europe, China, Mongolia, the Himalayas, where it rises to a height of up to 2700-3100 m above sea level; in the European part of Russia, in Western and Eastern Siberia, in the Far East.

All parts of the plant contain essential oil, the yield of which, depending on the growing season and the place where the plants grow, is 0,05-0,15%. The maximum accumulation of essential oil is observed in the stage of full flowering. The oil is found mainly in the flowers. The highest yield of essential oil (0,6-1,9%) was found in white-flowering plants.

The essential oil obtained from fresh plants is a transparent liquid of light yellow color with a lemon smell, which can serve as a source of citral, the content in the oil is 25-70%.

The maximum content of citral is observed in the initial phase of fruit maturity. In addition, the oil contains geraniol - 30%, thymol, nerol - 7% and other compounds. The fruits of the Moldavian snakehead contain 20-25% fatty oil.

Essential oil is used in the food industry mainly for flavoring foods. In the past, the plant was widely cultivated for the production of citral, which is used in the perfumery and cosmetics industry.

However, due to the low profitability and ease of obtaining citral from coriander oil linalool, the production use of snakehead under these conditions was discontinued.

The flowers and leaves of the snakehead have a pleasant smell of lemon. They are used in cooking in fresh and dried form as a seasoning (immediately before serving), for flavoring salads, first and second vegetable, meat, fish dishes, as well as for pickling cucumbers, tomatoes and for making bread kvass, tea, compote .

In the canning industry, it can be used instead of lemon balm, in spicy mixtures that replace black and allspice.

Serpentine goes well with lovage, savory and thyme.

The plant is similar in medicinal properties to lemon balm. It has a calming, analgesic, anticonvulsant effect; stimulates appetite, enhances the activity of the digestive organs.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Booby style drone 24.12.2016

The gannets are a family of seabirds from the pelican order. These birds fly at a speed of 50-60 km / h, dive into the water from a height of 30 m, fold their wings in 0,1 seconds, dive at a speed of almost 100 km / h and dive to a depth of 12-15 m. Quite naturally, that such remarkable qualities have attracted the attention of researchers at Imperial College London, who are developing a new type of drone.

This year saw the birth of several amphibious drones capable of moving both in the air and under water. For example, the Loon Copter developed by the University of Auckland (New Zealand) is a quadcopter that sits on the water, fills the buoyancy chamber with water and slowly sinks. And CRACUNS, made at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, on the contrary, spends most of the time under water and rises into the air only when necessary (however, it cannot return to the water yet).

In order to overcome the shortcomings of existing models and make the amphibious drone more agile, the researchers shaped their device, called the AquaMav, into a mini-rocket shape with variable wing configurations. The 200g drone is lifted into the air thanks to the wings that fold along the body when the need arises to dive like a booby. The drone pops out of the water just as fast with the help of a can of carbon dioxide, gaining enough speed to start gliding again. In this, the device is already more like a flying fish than a bird.

AquaMav is able to stay in the air for up to 14 minutes and reach speeds of up to 48 km/h. With a flight range of up to 5 km, the drone can be a good helper in emergency situations, for example, when oil is released into the water, since it can be used for both surveillance and water sampling.
