durian

Durian (Durio species from the Bombacaceae family) is an extremely popular fruit crop among the population of tropical Southeast Asia, especially on the islands of Indonesia, which are considered the birthplace of durian. Many species grow wild here.

All species are large trees with fruit-laden branches that require props. A total of 27 species are known, 6 of which produce edible fruits.

Durio zibethinus Murr. - durian, tree up to 45 m in height, complex inflorescence, bisexual flowers, fruit weighing up to 4 kg and up to 30 cm long, thick peel densely covered with thick spikes of 1-1,5 cm. The flesh is white or cream; the taste is exceptional, but the smell is repulsive. The species grows wild in the western part of the Malay Peninsula.

Durio kutejensis (Hassk.) Beccari - tree up to 25 m tall, yellow fruit, up to 20 cm long and 12 cm in diameter, covered with soft thorns and can be held in hands; the pulp is fleshy, juicy, without bad smell; cultivated in his homeland - on the island of Kalimantan; fails on other islands.

Durio oxeayanus Griffits - a large tree up to 40 m high, the trunk has disc-shaped supporting roots, the fruit is spherical, up to 20 cm in diameter, with 4 valves, with long thin and curved spines; the taste of the fruit is excellent, with a slight smell. In the wild, it grows on the Malay Peninsula, the islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan.

Durio graveolens Beccari - the trunk also has disc-shaped supporting roots, the fruits are sweetish, odorless; the species grows in Kalimantan, Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula.

durian

The most widely cultivated species is Durio zibethinus. It is cultivated in limited quantities in Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand and many countries in the tropical belt of Southeast Asia. A significant number of fruits are obtained from wild trees. Due to the high height of the tree, falling fruits pose a great danger to humans.

The strong and unpleasant aroma of the fruit resembles the smell of rotten meat and rotten eggs. Even many locals cannot eat the durian fruit, but most consider it the king of fruits. The bad smell can be eliminated by immersing the pulp of the fruit for one day in coconut milk. The fruit ripening season is short (July-September), and they cannot be stored for a long time; the harvest of one tree is up to 50 fruits per year.

The fruits contain about 34% carbohydrates (of which 12% are sugars), 3,9% oils, 2,8% protein, vitamins C and A. The local population salts the fruits and also prepares various dishes from them. Unripe fruits are used as vegetables. Like mangosteen, durian grows well and bears fruit in a humid tropical climate, on fertile soils with an abundance of soil moisture throughout the year.

Usually durian is propagated by seeds, although the properties of the original variety are not preserved. Of the vegetative propagation methods, grafting by proximity is most often used, as well as budding during the rainy season. Seedlings of local varieties are used as rootstocks. Trees are planted at a distance of 12-15 m from one another. Like the mangosteen, the durian enters the fruiting period quite late.

Durian (Durio) is a tropical fruit tree that is grown in Southeast Asia. This fruit has an intense smell and taste that is not liked by everyone, but is appreciated by many people for its taste and nutritional properties.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing durian:

Cultivation:

  • Durians can be grown in a variety of soil types, but they prefer fertile, well-drained soils and a sunny location.
  • The plant needs regular watering and fertilization in order to bear fruit productively.
  • Durians can be grown from seeds or cuttings.

Workpiece:

  • Durians are harvested when the fruits fall from the tree or when they themselves fall off.
  • Remove thorns and pulp from fruits using cutting tools or gloved hands.
  • You can eat fresh durian or use it to prepare various dishes.

Storage:

  • Durian should be stored in a cool and dry place, protected from sunlight and moisture.
  • Durian can be stored at room temperature for several days, but if you need to keep it for a longer period, you should put it in the refrigerator or freeze.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

silicon foil 24.08.2008

Belgian scientists have made micron-thick silicon foil. To make foil from aluminum or other ductile metal, a piece of it is rolled many times in a special mill. You cannot do this with silicon, it is fragile. And foil from it would be very useful, because the thinner the substrate of a microcircuit or a solar battery, the less silicon consumption.

Scientists from the Interuniversity Center for Microelectronics, headquartered in the Belgian city of Levin, managed to make a foil from a single crystal of silicon. To do this, they applied a thin layer of metal to the surface of a thick silicon wafer, and then annealed it at a high temperature.

During subsequent cooling, thermal stresses arise due to the difference in the metal and silicon lattices. A crack forms in the silicon, which propagates parallel to the wafer surface. Eventually, the metal layer and the silicon layer adhering to it are separated. After removing the metal, a silicon foil is obtained with a thickness of 30–50 μm and an area of 25 cm2.

A solar battery, without any tricks created on such a foil, showed an efficiency of 10%. This indicates that high voltages did not spoil the silicon at all, and it is suitable for further work.
