Maranta (West Indian arrowroot)

Maranta, or West Indian arrowroot, currently belongs to a special family of arrowroot (Marantaceae).

The main cultural species - Maranta arundinacea L. - is a perennial herbaceous plant, up to 1 m in height, pubescent with sparse thin hairs.

Stem green, with anthocyanin nodes; leaves with leaf sheaths. Inflorescences spike-shaped, apical; flowers are bisexual. Rhizomes are long, fusiform-thickened, segmented, 20-40 cm long, contain 25-27% easily digestible starch. They are dried and processed into flour.

The harvest of rhizomes reaches 8-12 t/ha and is ready in 8-10 months after planting.

Maranta (West Indian arrowroot)

Frost arrowroot tolerates well. Arrowroot grows wild in Brazil and the Fiji Islands.

It is also cultivated in Venezuela and in tropical parts of India and Africa.

cultivated and wild plants. Legends, myths, symbolism, description, cultivation, methods of application

Maranta (West Indian arrowroot), Maranta arundinacea is a plant from which starch is obtained, which is used in cooking and cosmetics.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing arrowroot:

Cultivation:

  • Maranta requires a warm and humid climate, well-drained soil, and adequate moisture.
  • Reproduction occurs through rhizomes, which are best planted in the garden in spring.
  • Maranta needs regular watering and fertilizing during periods of growth.
  • The plant grows best in semi-shady places, as direct sunlight can damage the leaves.

Workpiece:

  • Arrowroot roots contain a starch that can be used in cooking to make a variety of dishes such as soups, sauces, casseroles, and desserts.
  • Harvest the roots when they reach maturity (usually 9-12 months after sowing). Use them after pretreatment.
  • To extract starch from arrowroot roots, they need to be peeled, cut into pieces and soaked in water for several hours, then passed through a mill or crushed with a blender and squeezed the mass through gauze.

Storage:

  • Arrowroot starch can be stored in a sealed package in a cool and dry place for several months.
  • Fresh arrowroot roots can be stored in a cool and dry place for up to several months, provided they have been properly processed.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Potato milk 27.01.2018

A researcher from the University of Lund (Sweden), Eva Thornberg, took up the development of potato milk. One of the motives for creating the drink is allergy. In Norway, 1-3% of the population suffers from allergies to milk and dairy products. People with lactose intolerance need an alternative replacement.

"One of the concerns is the fortification of milk from potatoes with essential omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are mainly found in fatty fish," said Eva Thornberg.

Omega-3 acids are useful in that they eliminate the negative effects of harmful fatty acids and neutralize their oxidation products in the human body. It is technically difficult to convert a vegetable base into a creamy product such as milk. This is because plant proteins are more difficult to extract than animal proteins.

Thornberg discovered that creaminess can be achieved when the protein and starch in potatoes are heated in a certain way and mixed with canola oil, which is rich in omega-3 fatty acids.

According to the scientist, potato milk will contain 6% rapeseed oil. This means that 250 ml of alternative milk will cover half of the daily requirement of omega-3. In addition, the new dairy product does not contain allergens. In the future, potato milk will be marketed as an alternative to regular milk, yogurt, cream and ice cream.

The drink has already been tested in laboratory conditions, so it will probably go on sale this year. At first, most likely, it will be a cocktail of potato milk with apple juice and fruit.

The method of making the emulsion is patented under the name of Veg of Lund.
