Annual plant.

Flowers quadruple; all or identical in pairs, arranged in two circles; stamens 4, with anthers directed inward; triangular pollen; the fruit is a drupe ("nut"), covered with a smooth fleshy shell, which, when lying on the bottom of the reservoir, macerates, with lignified protrusions, the so-called horns, with sepals turned into spikes ("harpoons") with notches facing backwards.

It is believed that the plant self-pollinates even before the flowers open.

Leaves opposite, partially pinnately dissected; the plant forms adventitious roots located on one side, with alternate or opposite filiform underwater leaves and with rosettes of floating leaves; leaves are stipules lanceolate.

Grows in stagnant or slowly flowing waters. Leaf petioles glabrous or slightly pubescent.

The leaf blade is rhombic; flower stalks thin with hairy pubescence. The fruit is four-horned, 2,5-4 cm wide and 1,8-2,2 cm high.

The upper horns are horizontal with slightly raised points; between the upper and lower horns there are light spots, clearly visible against the almost black background of the fetus.

Water chestnut floating (floating rogulnik)

The fruits of water chestnuts contain seeds that taste like chestnuts. They are eaten both raw and cooked.

In India, China, Japan, Indochina, it is cultivated as an important food plant, from the seeds of which flour is made suitable for baking bread. For example, in India, the population living near water bodies eats water chestnut fruits for almost half a year.

In China, a type of water chestnut is cultivated - Trapa bicornis L. - with very large fruits, with two horns. Many species of water chestnut are common in the Far East, namely: T. In Europe grow: T. conocarpa (Aresch.) Fler, T. cruciaia (Glek.) Vassil., T. septentrionalis V. Vassil., T. rossica V. Vassil., T. natans L., T. maeotica Woron. In Europe and Western Siberia grows T. astrachanica (Fler.) Wint., T. carinthlca V. Vassil., T. europaea Fler.; in the Caucasus - T. hyrcana G. Woron., T. Maleevii V. Vas. and etc.

In tropical Asia, in Ceylon, as well as in China and Japan, T. bispinosa Roxburgh is cultivated.

cultivated and wild plants. Legends, myths, symbolism, description, cultivation, methods of application

The floating water chestnut, or floating rogulnik, is an aquatic plant that has the shape of a nut. It is used as food and has a high nutritional and energy value.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing floating water chestnut:

Cultivation:

  • The floating water chestnut grows in fresh water with a temperature of at least 20 ° C. The plant can grow both in ponds and in large containers indoors.
  • It is important to choose a location with sufficient access to sunlight and good water circulation.
  • Water chestnut floating seeds should be sown in early spring to a depth of 3-5 cm, they should be sown in the ground at the bottom of a pond or other container.
  • The plant needs constant access to water, so it is necessary to regularly maintain the water level.

Workpiece:

  • The floating water chestnut is used both raw and cooked. It has a sweet and crunchy taste reminiscent of nuts.
  • Once harvested, the nuts must be skinned and opened to extract the inner kernel, which can be used as food.
  • Nuts should be washed and air dried.

Storage:

  • Floating water chestnuts can be stored in a cool and dry place for several weeks.
  • Store nuts in an airtight container or ziplock bag.
  • If the nuts will not be used soon, they can be frozen or dried.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Hybrid offshore power plant 05.11.2022

One of China's four largest energy companies, State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC), has for the first time put into operation a hybrid offshore power plant - simultaneously powered by wind and solar energy. If the tests go well and the station has to weather storms and typhoons, the project will continue to grow with the prospect of deploying up to 42 GW of offshore hybrid capacity in the region.

The peak power of the first two rafts with solar panels is only 500 kW. The solar energy generated on the rafts is fed to a transformer installed in the wind turbine tower. From the power substation of the wind generator, electricity is sent to the mainland by an underwater cable to consumers.

The project of a hybrid offshore renewable power plant was developed by the Norwegian company Ocean Sun. This is the world's first practical implementation of the development. The Norwegians came up with the design of rafts and anchors so that they could withstand the impact of the elements without the consequences of the equipment.

Next year, the project is planned to be expanded to 20 MW.

In general, hybrid power plants using renewable energy sources make it possible to equalize the supply of electricity due to the natural (daily) spacing of peaks in time for wind and solar generation.
