Trembling aspen, Populus tremula. Botanical description of the plant, areas of growth and ecology, economic importance, applications

Aspen trembling

Willow family, class Dicotyledonous, department Angiosperms.

Aspen is a photophilous tree, it can reach 35 m and grow up to 180 years.

The trunks have smooth gray bark below and olive green above. The leaves are rounded or ovate, with large teeth. Aspen blooms in late April - early May. On some aspens, male inflorescences develop - catkins, consisting of staminate flowers that form a lot of pollen, and on others - female - catkins with pistillate flowers.

After pollination, fruits ripen - boxes. From them, light seeds with parachutes of hairs spill out and scatter.

Aspen is not accidentally called trembling. Even if it is quiet in the forest, not a breeze, the aspen leaves still tremble and tremble easily. This is because the petioles of the leaves are very long, so they cannot withstand the weight of the leaf blade and fluctuate all the time.

Aspen trembling

Aspen is unpretentious, it can grow on poor soils, it is not damaged by frosts, it quickly settles over long distances with the help of light seeds. Aspens develop horizontal rhizomes in the soil. Numerous new shoots arise from the buds on the rhizome, so aspens successfully grow in places where fires raged or logging was carried out.

Aspen trembling

Leaves and young shoots of aspen are eaten with pleasure by cows, goats, horses, deer, and elk. In winter, hares and beavers feed on shoots. Earrings are a delicacy for squirrels, and buds, leaves and young shoots are for capercaillie, black grouse and partridges. The wood of the tree is used to make matches, buttons, skis, shovels, and roof coverings (shingles). Here is a useful tree - aspen. In autumn, among the bright orange and red fallen leaves of aspens, red caps of aspen mushrooms rise - very tasty mushrooms.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Cloud connected microcontroller 10.03.2012

The idea of "cloud computing" has firmly captured the minds of developers and manufacturers of electronic devices. One of the evidence for this is an announcement made by Digi International. In collaboration with Freescale Semiconductor, iDigi Device Cloud, a secure and scalable cloud solution provider, has integrated cloud connectivity into Freescale Kinetis and ColdFire microcontroller platforms. The actual connection is made through the open interface iDigi Connector, designed, according to the developer, "for devices of any type."

As a result, users of Kinetis and ColdFire MCU systems have access to a web and mobile application development platform and device management tools. Partners emphasize that the connection is available "out of the box", without any additional components.

The motto of iDigi Device Cloud is the phrase "Any App, Anything, Anywhere", which, by the way, is registered as a trademark. Permeated with maximalism, it means the availability of any application and in general everything in any place. Marketing overhead aside, this means that consumers who operate electronic devices based on Freescale Kinetis and ColdFire microcontrollers will be able, in particular, to use the functions of remote and centralized administration of these devices, sharing and data exchange using the "cloud".

An example of how this works was demonstrated by iDigi at the Embedded World 2012 that ended yesterday. Kinetis K53 with MQX RTOS and iDigi Device Cloud access was used to demonstrate management functions such as updating firmware, checking status and configuration, rebooting devices. In addition, it was possible to exchange information via the "cloud" about the status of the built-in peripheral units - ADC, a PWM generator, LEDs, an accelerometer and other sensors. These features are available through the iDigi Manager Pro web interface from a cell phone or PC.

Freescale Kinetis and ColdFire platforms with iDigi Device Cloud integration will hit the market in July 2012.
