The aroma of steppe grasses covers dry valleys and slopes of ravines in a thick cloud, and essential oils, similar to flying vapors, give the aroma to these plants. Under the dome of these vapors, plants evaporate less moisture and are protected from the harmful effects of sultry rays.

Another purpose of essential oils is to repel animals. Many plants do not have thorns, no hard pubescence, and they can drive away animals from themselves only by smell.

Ether vapors are especially thick in ash thickets. Ash-grass, fragrant ash-tree, ash-tree - this is how a plant with ash leaves is called in folk dialects. It is also called the king-grass, and the ethereal for the unusual properties of the flower to ignite.

The scientific name of the white ash tree is dictamnus albus, which literally means "punishing bush". The ether vapors emitted by it can even cause burns.

B.P. Tokin in the book "Healing Poisons of Plants" notes: "Some species of this plant - Caucasian and Tien Shan - especially attract attention. It is reported that a skin burn appears not only when the plant is held in hands, but sometimes people get a burn if they approach the plant at a distance of one or two meters. "

According to Hebrew legends, the prototype of the ash tree was the burning bush - "a bush that is not consumed by fire", a plant found on the Sinai Peninsula, which, like the ash tree, emits volatile essential oils that ignite easily in the sun.

The ash tree belongs to the rue family, a characteristic feature of which is the presence of numerous glandular points in the leaves, where essential oils are formed that carry a strong aroma. In ash-tree they cover the whole plant, and so plentifully that in hot, calm weather, the ether that has saturated the air around it can ignite from a lit match and even ignite spontaneously.

In Central Asia and in Western Siberia, the narrow-leaved ash-tree grows, which the locals call a gas, or burning, plant,

Ancient Slavic legends claim that under the torches of the ash-tree, flowers dance at night. Lilies of the valley, cornflowers, asters, carnations, tulips, roses and many, many other flowers will gather on the lawn; they will gather, set fire to a dozen or two of ash-trees and quietly, quietly have fun ... The bells are ringing, poppies are waving their winged petals, carnations are swinging, daisies are spinning, and they do it so smoothly that the stars begin to blink in surprise.

This is probably the most beautiful sight that, unfortunately, no one has ever seen.

The rue family is Rutaceae.

Perennial herbaceous plant. Stem more or less curly downy, always bare below, 50-80 cm tall. The leaves are pinnate with three or four, five or six pairs of small, sharp, serrate leaflets at the top.

Inflorescence paniculate or racemose. Petals are pinkish-lilac, with purple veins, oblong, narrowed into a short nail. The fruit is a box.

Blooms in June - July. The fruits ripen in July - August.

It grows in the steppes, among shrubs, in light forests.

The range of the species covers mainland Europe, the Near (without the Arabian Peninsula) and the Middle East, Central Asia, India, Mongolia and China. It is found in Eastern Siberia, Altai and the Far East.

The roots and leaves contain alkaloids; their yield from the leaves in the vegetation phase is 0,28%. Among the alkaloids, skimmianine, dictamnine, trigonelline were found. The aerial part of the plant contains choline, saponins, essential oil.

The yield of essential oil from flowering plants is 0,09%, from fresh green leaves - 0,14-0,16%. The composition of the essential oil includes anethole and methylchavicol.

Green young parts of the plant before flowering are used as a spice. When in contact with the surface of the body, the essential oil causes painful, long-lasting burns.

In folk medicine, grass juice was used to remove warts; a decoction of the root - for diarrhea, as an antihelminthic and anti-febrile agent, for epilepsy, malaria, jaundice, angiocholitis; externally - with scabies, urticaria, baldness; infusion of seeds - as a cosmetic.

In the Caucasus, in the forest areas, Caucasian ash is found (Caucasian ash - Dictamnus caucasicus Fisch.).

Has a strong smell. Young shoots and leaves are used by the local population as a condiment for snacks.

In Eastern Siberia (Transbaikalia) and in the Far East, I is found. hairy (I. hairy - D. dasycarpus Turcz.). Used in the same way as the previous view.

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

The All-Seeing Eye of the Israeli Army 30.05.2012

The Israeli Air Force plans to test the MASINT hyperspectral intelligence system developed by Elbit Systems. MASINT is a new generation of surveillance and intelligence systems that can not only detect visible objects, such as infantry and armored vehicles, but also detect the spectral signatures of various materials, including uranium and poisonous substances. Currently, the MASINT prototype is deployed aboard the Hermes 450S unmanned aerial vehicle.

MASINT detects the spectral signatures of various substances, and does not just produce electro-optical or radar images of the target. Thanks to this, the new surveillance system is able to detect camouflaged storages of nuclear weapons and other dangerous materials, even if they are located, for example, in a simple private house. The Israeli Ministry of Defense has already conducted preliminary tests of the system, and this summer it is possible to equip at least one Hermes 450S military UAV with the MASINT system for combat testing.

Until now, systems like MASINT have not been used from UAVs. Modern electron-optical sensors are able to effectively detect camouflaged heat-radiating equipment or infantry. However, what exactly is in the bunker or the back of the truck has so far been impossible to determine. MASINT automatically captures spectral signatures in the vicinity of the target remotely and can determine exactly which cargo contains which object. MASINT does not produce a picture, but only detects the presence of a certain spectrum and then compares the results of observations with a database of spectral signatures. Together with electro-optical sensors, MASINT creates a powerful surveillance system that provides maximum information about the battlefield.

The MASINT hanging container weighs less than 60 kg and includes a primary hyperspectral sensor and a secondary camera capable of taking stereoscopic images. According to Elbit Systems, the system can "process" 100 square kilometers of surface per hour from a height of 4,5 km.
