Edelweiss, Leontopodium. Legends, myths, history

Edelweiss

Translated means "lion's paw" (from the Greek words leon - lion and podion - paw).

White edelweiss stars grow high in the mountains - almost at the very sky. To climb to the edelweiss on the sheer cliffs, courage is sometimes required. In the image of edelweiss, all the romance of mountain climbing was embodied. And not only. They say edelweiss smells like honey.

About a romantic flower, many regions compose their own legends. For different nations, mountain edelweiss means the same thing: love, devotion, courage.

The most common legend about edelweiss. Once upon a time there was a certain intractable princess. She agreed to marry, but only for the one who gets a rare flower. Numerous applicants set off for the mountains - but the edelweiss was as impregnable as the princess herself. Someone died, crashing on sheer cliffs, someone returned empty-handed, someone got scared.

Only years later, a young man was found who picked a flower. He was accompanied by unprecedented luck in his risky campaign. Finally, the delighted princess said "yes". But the young man, smiling, did not agree. After all, the capricious beauty had become an old woman by that time. And the young man, extracting a flower, together with him gained endurance and courage for many years.

Since then, many young men have been striving to give their beloved an edelweiss flower as a sign of their high feelings. Or, at least, a flower-shaped decoration, because edelweiss is now protected not only by impregnable rocks, it is forbidden to pick it in many countries.

Another legend about edelweiss is even more incredible.

As if on high impregnable rocks, fabulous beauties with long hair and claws live, with the help of which they easily move over the peaks and stones even at night. These fairy-tale creatures in female form scatter and carefully care for edelweiss flowers, zealously keeping the secret of their existence from people.

Plucked flowers do not wither, and dried ones remain in their original form for a long time, preserving their fabulous beauty. The daredevils who want to steal their beautiful silver stars from the beauties are mercilessly thrown into the abyss. And only those whose impulses to pick edelweiss are inspired by sincere and devoted love for their only one, they allow them to do this and stay alive, giving lovers a flower - a talisman of love. They say whoever can reach the edelweiss will gain courage, and luck will never leave him.

Another legend about edelweiss lives among the peoples of the mountains. The two lovers were to be eternally separated, but they could not imagine existence without each other. They decided to die together and threw themselves off a cliff. And the mountains were covered with beautiful snow-white flowers as a sign of sorrow, sadness and the triumph of love.

Edelweiss

The legend of the Snow Queen and edelweiss.

A long time ago, on the highest peak of the Alps, there lived a beautiful fairy, whom everyone called the Snow Queen. Mountain dwellers and shepherds climbed to the top to admire it, but they all fell off the cliff and crashed into the gorge. Fate so decreed that no mortal could marry the Snow Queen. But, despite this, many daredevils tried to talk to her, hoping that they would be able to achieve her.

Each petitioner was allowed to come to the majestic ice palace with a crystal roof, where the throne of the Queen stood. But at that moment, when he began to talk about his love and asked for her hand, thousands of goblins appeared, grabbed him and threw him off a cliff into a bottomless abyss. The Queen calmly watched this scene, her icy heart unable to feel.

The legend of the crystal palace and the beautiful heartless queen has reached the farthest alpine villages and the home of the fearless hunter. Fascinated by this legend, he decided to try his luck. Leaving his valley, he walked for many days, climbing the peaks covered with snow and ice, against the piercing wind. More than once it seemed to him that everything was lost, but the thought of the beautiful Queen gave him new strength and forced him to move on. Finally, after many days of conquering the summit, he saw before him an ice palace sparkling in the sun.

Gathering the last of his strength, the young hunter entered the Throne Room. He was so shocked by the beauty of the Snow Queen that he could not utter a word. The queen silently watched and thought, since he does not ask for her hand, then there is no need to call the goblins. But now, to her great amazement, she found that his behavior touched her heart. She realized that she liked this brave hunter, who was younger and more beautiful than the previous applicants for her hand.

Time passed and the Snow Queen, although she was afraid to admit it, would gladly marry this young man. Meanwhile the goblins watched their mistress; at first they were very surprised, and then they became more and more upset. They were very afraid that their Queen might break the law, and this would bring the wrath of Fate to the Mountain Folk.

Seeing that the queen was in no hurry to give the order to get rid of the hunter, the goblins decided to take the initiative into their own hands. One evening, when it got dark, they jumped out and grabbed the young hunter. And they threw him off the cliff. The Snow Queen saw all this through the window, but could not do anything. But the icy heart of the beautiful and cruel fairy melted, and she became a simple loving woman.

A tear fell from her eyes, the first in her life. The Snow Queen's tear fell on the stone and turned into a small silver star. It was the first edelweiss - a flower that since then grows only in the highest, most inaccessible peaks of the Alps, on the edge of the abyss.

Edelweiss

Edelweiss has become not only a symbol of mountains, but of love, courage and courage. There were many legends and legends about the wonderful silver flower growing high in the mountains. Yes, he himself became, in a sense, a legend.

One of the many legends about edelweiss that are told in the Carpathians. In the vicinity of Mount Petros, a Hutsul family once lived. One summer they were visited by acquaintances with their twin sons. The Hutsul had a beautiful daughter. In long conversations, it turned out that the children in both families were born in the same year and day. After this visit, the girl and the young men often met, walked in the picturesque surroundings of Petros.

The young men fell in love with the daughter of the Hutsul, and the girl liked the guys too - one was better than the other. For a long time, the guys were tormented by indecision, but nevertheless, each secretly from his brother explained to the girl his feelings. Parents did not resist a possible wedding, only the girl herself had to decide who to give preference to. But it was difficult for her to make a choice. Finally, she said to the brothers: "Whoever of you brings me a silk flower as a gift, I will give my heart and hand to him." For a long time, the guys walked through the mountains in search of a silk flower (as edelweiss is called in the Carpathians). Climbing up the meadow, they met an old shepherd and told him about their worries.

The shepherd pointed to the steep slopes of the three-headed mountain: “A silk flower grows there. Only the most courageous and strong guy can get it. Climbing the rocks is not easy. In addition, the flowers are guarded by very beautiful magical girls. mountainous kingdom, otherwise they will throw you off the cliffs into deep gorges."

It didn't scare the guys. Love gave strength. The road to the mountains was difficult and long. On an impregnable cliff, they finally saw one flower. Ahead of each other, the brothers in a hurry climbed the sheer cliffs. Everyone wanted to be the first to pick a flower. One of the guys managed to get to the edelweiss. But then the magical girls appeared, inviting the young men to stay among them. The brothers disagreed.

And the mountain women got angry: "You will not see happiness in life!" Under the feet of the guy who reached out first to the edelweiss, the rock collapses, he breaks down and, falling, knocks his brother into the abyss. The girl waited a long time for the boys. Without waiting, she went to the mountains in search. On the meadow, the old shepherd told her about the meeting with the guys, showed the rocks to which they had gone. The girl rose to the cliffs and saw traces of a terrible misfortune. The daughter of the Hutsul could not bear the grief and threw herself off the cliff into the abyss.

In France, edelweiss is called an alpine star because the rocks on which it grows seem to be strewn with stars, in Italy - a silver flower of rocks.

Edelweiss is also called "Promethean flower". According to legend, Prometheus was chained precisely to those rocks on which edelweiss grows.

Edelweiss. Botanical description, plant history, legends and folk traditions, cultivation and use

Edelweiss

Edelweiss conquers the hearts of the most inaccessible beauties. As evidence of devoted love, young men bring girls proud edelweiss that grow on the hard-to-reach slopes of the Alps.

The legend tells how one hard-hearted beauty announced that she would marry only the one who would give her a bouquet of edelweiss. One by one, the young men went to the mountains for flowers and returned with nothing. But the beauty insisted on her own. A few years later, she did receive a bouquet of edelweiss from a young man, but he refused to marry her, because he saw an aged woman in front of him.

In some places, edelweiss is called the Prometheus flower, apparently because it grows on the slopes to which, according to legend, Prometheus was once chained.

Edelweiss grows at an altitude of 1700-2300 meters above sea level, in more accessible places a rare plant is almost destroyed. Therefore, in the Austrian Alps there are guard posts with radio transmitters, and as soon as a tourist plucks a plant, the deed becomes known, and the poacher will be punished.

The Czech botanist V. Vazak, who visited the mountains of Mongolia, claims that local edelweiss shepherds make fires there, because there is no other fuel in the mountains.

The flower is called there "uul-ubs", which means "tinder-grass": indeed, edelweiss leaves wrapped in white felt do not burn with a bright flame, but smolder like tinder.

cultivated and wild plants. Legends, myths, symbolism, description, cultivation, methods of application

Edelweiss (Leontopodium) is a beautiful mountain plant native to the highlands of Europe and Asia. Its flowers are widely used for decorative purposes, as well as in medicine and cosmetology.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing edelweiss:

Cultivation:

  • Soil Selection: Edelweiss prefers light, well-drained soils. The ideal option is rocky or sandy soil with a neutral or slightly acidic pH.
  • Light: Edelweiss thrives best in full sun. It needs bright sunlight to fully grow and bloom.
  • Planting distance and depth: The distance between edelweiss plants depends on their size. It is generally recommended to leave approximately 15-30 cm between plants. Planting depth should be such that the root neck (the junction of the stem and roots) is at the level of the soil.
  • Growing: Edelweiss can be grown from seeds or cuttings. Sow seeds in early spring or fall. Place seeds or cuttings on the surface of the soil and cover them with a thin layer of sand. Water regularly to keep the soil moist until emergence.
  • Care: After the emergence of edelweiss seedlings, make sure that the soil remains moist, but not waterlogged. Remove weeds and mulch around plants to retain moisture and prevent weed growth. Trim off faded flowers to encourage new blooms.
  • Edelweiss needs good air circulation, so don't plant plants too close together.
  • Protect edelweiss from strong winds and cold winter temperatures, especially if grown in more southerly regions.

Workpiece:

  • Edelweiss flowers should be collected in July-August, when they are fully opened.
  • Flowers must be collected in dry weather and at an altitude of at least 2000 meters above sea level.
  • Flowers should be air dried and stored in a dry and cool place.

Storage:

  • Dried edelweiss flowers can be stored in tightly closed containers in a cool and dry place for up to 1 year.
  • Flowers can be used to make tea, tinctures, cosmetics and other products.

Please note that some types of edelweiss may be protected by law, so it is recommended to check with local authorities before collecting and using.

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Reduced power consumption of the graphics core 14.02.2014

Intel has developed a new integrated graphics core that it says can improve the battery life of smartphones, tablets and laptops. As Intel spokeswoman Divya Kolar points out, graphics can use a lot of energy, but the new energy-efficient GPU core paired with the company's CPU can achieve a fundamental reduction in energy consumption.

"This graphics core includes a number of new features that increase energy efficiency by 40% - resulting in mobile devices with more battery life for the same performance, or increased performance when needed," she wrote in a company blog.

The graphics core was developed by Intel specialists. The company spoke about the technology at the International Solid State Circuits Conference in San Francisco. It is worth noting that the graphics may soon be used in the company's chips. The fact is that the current core is designed for a run-in 22-nm process technology. However, Intel does not say which commercial chips are in question, saying only that this is a single-chip system (it can be assumed that energy-efficient graphics will appear in the Atom series processors for tablets and smartphones). So far, the GPU is being tested on a prototype processor in Intel's research labs.

Promising technologies developed in the depths of Intel eventually (not always soon) are being introduced into final consumer products. For example, many of the graphics and computing technologies from Intel's Larrabee discrete graphics project are now used in the company's integrated GPUs, as well as in the highly parallel Xeon Phi server processors.

The company says that the main cost savings in mobile chips are usually achieved by developers by lowering the operating voltage of the chips. Taking advantage of 22nm technology with 3D transistors enables high performance even at lower voltages. However, despite the 3D transistors, some specialized blocks (like memory arrays) inside the graphics core act as a noticeable limiter for the entire chip in terms of the minimum voltage (Vmin). The new GPU design uses a special method of selectively boosting the Vmin voltage for individual chip blocks (primarily for memory arrays). This resulted in a large increase in energy efficiency.

To achieve additional savings, Intel has improved the operation of intelligent adaptive control circuits for power consumption of the chip (primarily frequency and voltage depending on the load). Another feature of the new Intel graphics core is the ability to very quickly switch to standby mode, in which energy savings are 10 times more powerful than active mode - this is another way to save energy in mobile devices. The number of blocks that can go into standby mode on their own or turn off completely has also been increased.
