Lesser duckweed Lesser duckweed

Basic scientific information, legends, myths, symbolism

Sort by: Lemna

Family: Araceae (water lilies)

Origin: Worldwide, but mostly found in the temperate Northern Hemisphere.

Chemical composition: Lesser duckweed contains proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins and trace elements such as iron, calcium and magnesium.

Economic value: Lesser duckweed is used as food for fish and livestock, and in environmental studies as an indicator of water quality. The plant is also used as a food product, in particular, in Asia, duckweed is eaten raw or after short-term boiling.

Legends, myths, symbolism: In some cultures, lesser duckweed may be associated with the concept of "lightness" or "weightlessness". This is due to the fact that duckweed is very light and can even float on the surface of the water, due to its ability to absorb air. In this sense, small duckweed can symbolize weightlessness or lightness of being. In addition, in some cultures, lesser duckweed may be associated with purity and holiness. In the Christian tradition, for example, duckweed can be regarded as a symbol of the purity of the soul and body, as it grows in clean water bodies. Also, small duckweed can be associated with the symbolism of the "beginning". According to tradition, this plant was one of the first to appear on earth, and as such can symbolize the beginning of life and growth.

Lesser duckweed

Duckweed is a genus of small floating plants of the duckweed family.

Escape in the form of a small green plate with reduced leaves and one root. Blooms extremely rarely.

In autumn, duckweed stores nutrients - it forms the so-called buds and sinks to the bottom. Having survived the winter at the bottom, the duckweed emerges in the spring and continues its development, giving life to new plants.

The dry matter of duckweed contains up to 38% protein, up to 5% fat, 17% fiber, 6% calcium, 3% phosphorus, 2% magnesium, 0,048 mg% cobalt, 0,018 mg% bromine, 0,032 mg% copper, 0,07 mg % nickel, 0,48 mg% titanium, manganese, iodine, zinc, vanadium, etc.

Duckweed has found application as an excellent feed for farm animals and birds.

The productivity of duckweed is quite high. Experts believe that up to 80 tons of green mass can be harvested per hectare per season. In Uzbekistan, 8 tons per hectare were collected in 276 months.

Lesser duckweed

Collecting duckweed is not very burdensome. It is driven to the shore with a fine-mesh net, and then scooped out with a small net. Small duckweed is able to clean water from pollution.

Duckweed has been used in human nutrition for a long time. From it you can cook salads, seasonings for second courses, cook soups and cabbage soup, use for seasoning first courses. The taste of duckweed, grown in clean conditions, almost does not differ from ordinary lettuce.

It is possible to collect duckweed for food from reservoirs only if they are not polluted with sewage and are not used as fattening ponds for waterfowl.

cultivated and wild plants. Legends, myths, symbolism, description, cultivation, methods of application

Lesser duckweed (Lemna minor) is a small aquatic plant that can be grown as food for fish and livestock, as well as a decorative element for aquariums and ponds.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing duckweed:

Cultivation:

  • Lesser duckweed can grow in any conditions, but prefers sunny places and fresh water. It can survive in the shade, but under such conditions, growth may slow down.
  • It is recommended to sow duckweed in spring or summer in a pond or other container filled with fresh water.
  • Plants should be on the surface of the water, not sinking into the depths.
  • Duckweed does not require special care, but water pollution and its overload with fertilizers should be avoided.

Workpiece:

  • Lesser duckweed can be used for feeding fish or livestock fresh or dry.
  • To collect duckweed from the pond, you can use a net or simply collect it with your hands.
  • It is better to collect duckweed in small portions to avoid rotting.
  • To dry duckweed, place it on paper towels in the sun or in a cool, dry place.

Storage:

  • Fresh duckweed can be stored in a cool, clean place for several days.
  • Dried duckweed can be stored in airtight containers in a cool, dry place for up to 6 months.
  • Duckweed can also be frozen for long term storage.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Bridge made of water in an electric field 04.02.2008

Researchers from the Graz University of Technology (Austria) have discovered an unusual property of water: in a strong electric field, a water bridge forms between two glasses of water.

The Austrian scientists' experiment was simple. They filled two laboratory beakers with a volume of 100 ml with distilled water so that the distance from the surface of the water to the edges was 3 mm. The glasses were placed at a distance of 1 mm from each other and electrodes were placed in them, one of which was grounded, and a constant voltage of 15 kV was applied to the other.

To the surprise of the experimenters, a cylindrical water bridge formed between the glasses. At a voltage of 25 kV, the maximum length of the bridge reached 25 mm. With a quick power outage, the bridge broke up into many drops. If a charged glass rod was brought to the bridge, it was attracted to it and formed a water arch. When any ions were added to the water, the water bridge was destroyed.

Scientists noted that regardless of the length of the bridge, there is a transfer of water from one glass to another. The heating of the bridge was recorded - the thinner it is, the more the water heated up. Interestingly, the density of water in the bridge was 7% higher than usual. Perhaps the water molecules in the bridge line up in a denser highly ordered structure.

How is such a bridge formed? The researchers suggest that it may occur due to the electrostatic interaction of charges on the surface of the water.
