Broom Broom

Basic scientific information, legends, myths, symbolism

Sort by: Broom (Cytisus)

Family: Legumes (Fabaceae)

Origin: Europe, North Africa, western and central Asia.

Area: Broom grows in a variety of conditions - from mountain slopes to forest edges and desert areas.

Chemical composition: Broom contains alkaloids, flavonoids, carotenoids, terpenes and other biologically active substances.

Economic value: Some types of broom are used in landscape design and gardening due to their decorative effect. In medicine, certain types of broom are used as a remedy for the treatment of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, cardiovascular system, as well as antiseptics and antipyretics.

Legends, myths, symbolism: In ancient Greek mythology, broom was associated with the goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite. According to legend, when the goddess was born from sea foam, her garlands of broom flowers, which she wore in her hair, fell to the ground. This flower was also associated with the goddess of spring and fertility, Persephone. In folk medicine, broom was used to treat a variety of ailments, including colds, flu, and skin conditions. In folk magic and rituals, broom was used as an amulet that protected from evil spirits and corruption. In British culture, broom has become a symbol of poverty and inferiority. Broom
Cytisus scoparius

Broom is a genus of shrubs, less often trees, of the legume family (Fabaceae).

Shrubs, rarely small trees, with leaves falling in winter, rarely evergreen, sometimes with small spines.

The leaf arrangement is alternate. Leaves trifoliate, rarely reduced to one leaflet; stipules are small or absent.

Flowers 2-3 cm long, moth-like, yellow, white, rarely purple or pinkish, axillary, in racemes or heads at the ends of shoots. Calyx tubular, bell-shaped or funnel-shaped, much longer than wide, distinctly two-lipped, 10-15 mm long; the sail is longer than the wings and the boat, usually with a notch at the top, the boat is pubescent along the keel, blunt. Stamens 10, fused into a tube; ovary sessile, rarely pedunculated; style curved with capitate or oblique stigma.

In the broom, the flower is arranged in such a way that as soon as an insect lands on it, the stamens, bent with tension under a cover of petals, straighten up with a jerk and hit the bee from below, covering its fluffy underbelly with pollen.

Legumes linear, cracking, 1-2 or multi-seeded. Seeds are reniform, flat, shiny, with seed.

Propagated by sowing seeds in the spring after stratification under snow for 2 months, as well as green cuttings, layering and grafting.

Seedlings with wide elliptical cotyledons 0,8-1 cm long, 0,3-0,6 cm wide, on short petioles; the first leaves are alternate, trifoliate.

The wood is sparsely vascular or annular with a pattern, with a more or less distinct division into heartwood and sapwood; the core is brownish-red, often vague in outline; sapwood yellowish-brown. Annual rings are well defined. Vessels and rays are visible to the naked eye. Differences in the structure of wood in individual species of the genus are insignificant.

The range of the genus covers Europe, North Africa and Western Asia.

Broom
Cytisus pinnatus

They grow mainly on light and dry sandy and sandy loamy soils or, often, on limestone outcrops.

Photophilous.

Wood is characterized by rather high mechanical properties, decorative texture and beautiful coloring. However, due to the small size of the trunks, it is used only for small crafts.

Plants are of decorative value, especially during long flowering in early spring or summer; used for planting in gardens and parks singly, in groups or in borders; undersized species on rocky hills; evergreen species go in greenhouse culture; flowering in early spring are used in forcing.

Honey plants.

Contain the alkaloid cytisine, which increases blood pressure and stimulates respiration; some species are used in medicine. The seeds and green parts of the plant contain the alkaloid sparteine.

Used for livestock feed.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

School and life 26.08.2012

After the Second World War, school reforms were carried out in many countries, mainly aimed at lengthening the school years. But it was only in Sweden that the government approached the matter with caution and conducted an experiment first.

Some of the children continued to study in the old way, 8 years old, for excellent students (optional) one or two more classes. The rest of the school districts introduced compulsory nine-year secondary education, with no options. The experiment lasted from 1949 to 1962, after which the results were recognized as successful and the new system was distributed throughout the country.

Recently, sociologists from Stockholm University looked at the results of the then reform from an unexpected angle: how did it affect the life expectancy of students? It turned out that up to the age of 40 in both groups the mortality was the same, but from 40 to 70 for those who studied in a new way, the risk of dying from cancer, cardiovascular disease or accidents was lowered.

Demographers have previously noticed that more educated people get sick less often and live longer than less educated people, but the Swedish experience is interesting in that it has proved the benefits of even one extra year spent in high school on the material of the whole country.
