Dracaena. Legends, myths, history

Dracaena

According to the Aztec legend, which has come down to our days, the beautiful girl Quelkazcuotl and the brave young man Tetzcaomatl lived in ancient times. They fell in love, but Quelkatzcuotl was the daughter of the High Priest, and Tetzcaomatl was just a simple poor warrior.

The secret love of young people flared up more and more and, finally, the young man gathered his courage and decided to ask the High Priest for the hand of his daughter. The high priest became angry and, in a rage, seizing a stick for the sacrificial fire lying nearby, he thrust it into the ground with force with the words:

“I command you to come here every day, to the temple, and water this dry stick with water. If at least one green leaf appears on it, I, so be it, will give you my daughter as a wife. But if in five days the stick does not come to life, you will be sacrificed to the gods for your insolence!

Realizing that he had died, Tetzcaomatl came to the temple in anguish and poured water on a dry stick, as the priest commanded, and Quelkatzcuotl spent her days in tears. But a miracle happened! On the fourth day, a timid green sprout appeared on a dry tree.

Not believing his luck, on the fifth day the young man ran to the temple at dawn and saw a magical picture: the whole stick from top to bottom was covered with dense green leaves, slightly moving from the breeze.

The young people got married and went to this tree all their lives, giving thanks to the gods for the happiness they had been given. Since then, the descendants of the once great tribe believe that a small part of the dracaena trunk, cut off at midnight on a full moon and carefully watered, brings happiness in love.

Dracaena

Another old Indian legend tells that a long time ago on the island of Socotra, which is located in the Arabian Sea, there lived a powerful bloodthirsty dragon. He got into the habit of attacking elephants and drinking their blood. But one day, one old and strong elephant, defending himself, fell on the dragon and crushed him. Their blood mixed and moistened the ground around, and after a while, trees called dragon trees, or dracaena, which in Greek means "female dragon" grew on this place.

Red spots of resinous juice appear on the trunks of dracaena, which the locals call "the blood of two brothers" or "cinnabar", and one of the dracaena is called "cinnabar-red".

In 1402, the island of Tenerife was discovered, where a strangely shaped tree with a thick trunk and a large hollow inside grew on a high mountain. Its height was 23 meters, its diameter was more than 4 meters, and the girth of the trunk was 15 meters. The locals considered the tree sacred; an altar was placed inside its hollow.

Dracaenas of somewhat smaller sizes now grow on that island.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Vegetarian spider 19.05.2009

Zoologists have discovered a new species of spider in Mexico that feeds almost exclusively on acacia leaves and nectar.

It is not so easy for a spider to get food, because on this acacia, in the cavities inside its large spikes, ants also live, claiming the same resources. The Ants set things on a grand scale: each tree has its own colony and detachments are organized to guard the sources of nectar and young leaves rich in protein and fat.

Spiders have to bypass ant patrols to eat. Sometimes they attack ants carrying their larvae, take away and eat this burden, but basically they still prefer plant food.
