Helenium. Legends, myths, history

Helenium

Gelenium is our guide from summer to autumn. The Greeks associated its appearance with the beginning of the Trojan War.

The son of the king of Troy, Paris, kidnapped a young beauty - the wife of the ruler of Sparta, Minelaus. As we remember, King Minelaus was strongly opposed and went to war against Troy. While in the besieged Troy, Elena the Beautiful wove fabric for a cloak with gold threads and mourned her fate. Her tears, shimmering with a golden sheen, fell to the ground and turned into bright sunny flowers, which were later called gelenium. Striking, of course, is the ability of ancient women to be in a situation - and balance is maintained, and a cloak for a husband is woven, and flowers.

Heleniums belong to the aster family, and they came to us from North and Central America. Back in 1753, Carl Linnaeus first described the only known species of Helenium autumnale. Garden forms and varieties of hybrid origin are combined under the name "gelenium hybrid" (N. hybridum). Very beautiful shrub perennials, which are referred to as "giants of the garden". They grow up to one and a half meters, they have strong stems that branch out at the top, and a bud forms on each branch. On one stem, up to 20 bright flowers bloom at the same time, forming inflorescences almost half a meter in diameter.

Helenium is unpretentious. Loves the sun, light partial shade. Soils need fertile, humus, permeable, moderately moist. Tolerates frost well. It is highly resistant to diseases and is practically not attacked by pests. Once every 4 years, the gelenium needs to be divided, because the bush is aging. It blooms from mid-July until the first cold weather, depending on the variety.

A great option if you want lush bushes with bright, chamomile-like flowers in the garden in early autumn. Plant according to the size of the plant - tall bushes will create a screen for lower ones, and low ones look great on their own. It is very beautiful to watch the flowers sway in the wind, and there are always a lot of bees and bumblebees around.

Helenium, Helenium. Tips for growing, harvesting and storing

cultivated and wild plants. Legends, myths, symbolism, description, cultivation, methods of application

Helenium is a perennial herbaceous plant of the Asteraceae family. There are more than 40 types of gelenium, common in North and South America.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing geleniums:

Cultivation:

  • Geleniums prefer sunny places, but can also grow in partial shade. Grow well on fertile, well-drained soils with neutral acidity.
  • Geleniums are planted in spring or autumn at a distance of about 30-40 cm from each other. Planting depth should be equal to the depth at which the plant grew in a container or nursery.
  • Watering geleniums should be moderate, avoiding drought or waterlogging.
  • During the flowering period, geleniums need regular fertilizer with mineral fertilizers.

Workpiece:

  • Gelenium flowers are used to create bouquets and compositions. To keep the freshness of the flowers, they should be cut in the morning or in the evening, when they have not yet fully opened.
  • Gelenium flower stalks can be dried by hanging them upside down in a dark and well-ventilated place.

Storage:

  • Dry gelenium flower stalks can be stored in paper or cotton bags in a cool and dry place for up to a year.
  • Freshly cut gelenium flowers should be placed in water and changed every few days. Thus, they can keep their freshness for about a week.

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>
