sandy sedge

Sandy sedge is a perennial herbaceous plant, a species of the genus Sedge (Carex) of the sedge family (Cyperaceae).

Rigid, gray-green, monoecious plant with a thick, fragrant, up to 3-5 mm in diameter, long-creeping rhizome, with a thin, lagging and wrinkling bark, covered with split light-brown sheaths.

Stems several, curved, rough at the top, dressed at the base with leafless, buffy sheaths.

The leaves are equal to the stem or longer than it, up to 3 mm wide, semi-folded, long and finely pointed, curved.

Spikelets including (3)10-16(18), brownish-rusty, upper - male or androgynous, less often female, middle - androgynous or male, lower - female or androgynous, collected in an oblong, spread downward spike, with 1-2 short bracts. Scales lanceolate, spinous, rusty, with a greenish keel and a light edge, longer than the sacs. Sacs are semi-skinny, ovoid or oblong-ovate, (4)4,5-5(5,5) mm long, flat-convex, rusty, with a few veins on both sides, widely and serrately winged from the middle upwards (wing 0,4 -0,5 (0,7) mm), glabrous or barely noticeable along the veins, shortly pubescent, rounded at the base, on a short stalk, gradually narrowing into an elongated, deeply split, two-toothed spout. Covering leaves are scaly.

Number of chromosomes 2n=60, 64 (Rohweder, 1938).

The species is described from Europe.

It varies in the structure of the spikelets in the inflorescence, the upper ones are androgynous or staminate and very rarely pistillate, the middle ones are androgynous or pistillate, the lower ones are pistillate or extremely rarely androgynous.

The range covers the south of Northern Europe, Eastern and Atlantic Europe, the Baltic countries

It grows on coastal, lake and river loose sands, dunes, in coastal pine forests.

Sandy sedge is a good fixer of sands.

Ethnoscience:

  • For the treatment of respiratory diseases: Brew 2 teaspoons of dry sand sedge roots in 1 cup boiling water. Leave for 15-20 minutes, then strain. Take 1 tablespoon 3-4 times daily to reduce symptoms of bronchitis, asthma and other respiratory problems.
  • For the treatment of joint pain: Mix 1 tablespoon of dried sandsedge roots with 1 tablespoon of honey and 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar. Apply this mixture on the affected joints and leave on for 15-20 minutes, then wash off with warm water. This will help reduce inflammation and eliminate pain.
  • For the treatment of skin diseases: Mix 2 tablespoons of dried sandsedge roots with 1 tablespoon of honey and enough water to make a paste. Apply this paste on the affected areas of the skin and leave it on for 20-30 minutes, then wash off with warm water. This will help reduce the inflammation and itching associated with eczema and other skin conditions.

Cosmetology:

  • Moisturizing face mask: mix 1 tablespoon of sandsedge powder with 2 tablespoons of honey and 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Apply the mixture on your face, avoiding the eye area, and leave on for 15-20 minutes. Then wash off with warm water.
  • Soft body scrub: mix sandsedge powder with coconut oil and a little honey. This scrub will help eliminate dead skin cells, making it soft and smooth.
  • Skin soothing agent: brew 2 tablespoons of sand sedge in 1 liter of boiling water and leave for 30 minutes. Then strain, pour into a spray bottle and use to hydrate and soothe skin any time of the day.
  • Hair oil: Mix 1 tablespoon of sandsedge powder with 2 tablespoons of olive oil and a little water. This mixture can be used to massage the scalp and strengthen the hair.

The sandy sedge, Carex arenaria, is a perennial plant common in arid and sandy regions of Europe, Asia, and North America. It can be useful for landscaping sandy areas or for creating low-growing hedges.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing sand sedge:

Cultivation:

  • The sand sedge prefers sunny locations with well-drained soils such as sand or rocky soils.
  • It can be propagated by seeds, division of the bush or cuttings.
  • It grows slowly and can take up to several years to reach full maturity.
  • It is necessary to periodically feed the sandy sedge with organic fertilizers and maintain the soil during a drought.

Preparation and storage:

  • Sandy sedge leaves can be collected at any time of the year and dried in the sun.
  • Store dried leaves in dry containers or paper bags in a cool, dry place.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Car tires with living moss inside 19.03.2018

Goodyear presented at the next Geneva Motor Show a very unusual concept - Oxygene tires with living moss inside, which absorbs carbon dioxide and produces oxygen.

It is assumed that such tires will be able to generate energy through photosynthesis. As planned by the company, they will absorb CO2 from the air and moisture from the road surface, nourishing the moss inside the sidewall, and produce oxygen. Goodyear estimates that in a city the size of Paris with about 2,5 million cars on the road, the widespread use of Oxygene tires will generate about 3 tons of oxygen and absorb more than 000 tons of carbon dioxide per year.

In addition, the concept tires use the resulting energy to power the internal electronics, in particular the built-in sensors and the data processing unit. It is also noted that the tires will use Li-Fi technology, which will allow them to "communicate" with other cars and road infrastructure. The treads, according to Goodyear, will be 3D printed from rubber powder obtained from recycled tyres.
