Omezhnik water (Omezhnik water)

Omezhnik water, or Omezhnik water (Oenanthe aquatica) is a biennial poisonous plant, a species of the genus Omezhnik (Oenanthe) of the Umbrella family (Apiaceae).

A plant 40-150 cm high with filiform roots and a branched stem. Stems glabrous, ribbed from base hollow. Leaves are pinnatifid twice and thrice. Submerged leaves are dissected into long filiform lobes. The flowers are small, white, collected in complex umbrellas. Blooms in June-September. The fruits ripen in August-September.

Grows in swamps, river banks, lakes, ponds, swampy meadows.

The plant contains an unexplored resinous substance enanthotoxin (similar in action to cicutoxin poisonous milestone). The seeds contain up to 1,5-2,5% essential oil, which contains the poisonous terpene phellandrene. The fruits contain up to 20% fatty oil and 4% resinous substances.
