Synthesized a new form of carbon

18.01.2023

Carbon can take on a wide variety of forms. The most famous of them are diamond and graphite. Scientists are able to synthesize other types, for example, two-dimensional graphene and fullerene. Now another one has been added to the list.

Specialists from South Korea and China have created a new kind of carbon by heating fullerene with lithium nitride. The new type of carbon is similar to Schwarzite, but still different.

The so-called "schwarzite" or sp2-hybrid carbon with negative curvature was theoretically envisaged as early as the XNUMXth century. He, as the study says, was and remains the dream of scientists in the field of carbon materials, but there were problems with obtaining it. Although this kind of carbon can be synthesized in the pores of zeolites, the crystalline forms of silicon dioxide, this method is not ideal because some of the pores are simply too small.

The new material is based on C60 fullerene powder mixed with lithium nitride and then heated to moderate temperatures under a pressure of one atmosphere. Lithium nitride catalyzes the breaking of carbon bonds in C60. New CC bonds are formed with neighboring C60 molecules. The process of electron transfer triggers the formation of a new type of carbon, which the scientists have called long range ordered porous carbon (LOPC).

LOPC consists of "broken C60 cells" interconnected at a distant periodicity. That is, each of the broken C60 cells is still concentrated on the nodes of the face-centered cubic lattice, but they were "open" to a certain extent and formed bonds with each other. This is a somewhat unusual situation - there is still some type of long-range periodic order, but not every broken C60 cell is identical to its neighbors.

Scientists are figuring out the properties of the new material and cannot yet name the areas in which it can be applied, but it can be, for example, the collection, conversion and storage of energy, since LOPC is electrically conductive. Scientists note that the new material is characterized by good scalability - the synthesis can be increased to kilograms.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

A new company in the LCD backlight market 22.12.2006

In August 2006, Omron Corporation announced that it had acquired a 100% stake in Pioneer Precision Machinery Corporation (Pioneer PMC), a subsidiary of Pioneer Corporation.

The acquired company changed its name to Omron Precision Technology Co. Ltd. As a result of this acquisition, Omron will have more than 20% (the largest share) of the global market for miniature LCD backlight LED modules in terms of sales (according to Omron). Forecasts indicate that the LED LCD backlight business will grow rapidly.

Omron aims to become the world's leading manufacturer of backlight modules in all sizes. These hopes are based on a combination of Pioneer PMC's newly acquired business and Omron Corporation's own production of such modules in small and large sizes.
