Veronica Veronica

Basic scientific information, legends, myths, symbolism

The genus Veronica includes more than 500 species of herbaceous plants of the Shield family (Plantaginaceae). They come from different parts of the world, but the bulk of the species come from North America and Europe.

The chemical composition of various types of Veronica may vary, but they usually contain flavonoids, terpenes, alkaloids, saponins, tannins and other biologically active substances.

Veronica is often used in folk medicine to treat various ailments. It can also be used as a fodder crop for livestock and bees, and some species can be used as ornamental plants.

Legends, myths, symbolism: In Christian tradition, Veronica is associated with the story of Christ passing by Veronica on his way to the crucifixion. Veronica was a woman who lived at the time of the crucifixion of Jesus. According to legend, when Jesus passed by Veronica, she saw that He was exhausted and destitute, and decided to help Him. She went up to Him and, seeing that His face was covered with sweat, she took her handkerchief and wiped His face. After that, a trace of Christ's face remained on the scarf, which became known as "Sir Not Made by Hands." Veronica, which means "true image" in Latin, has become a symbol of true faith and purity. Veronica has been used in folk medicine to treat many ailments such as headaches, runny noses, coughs and colds. It has also been used as a sedative to relieve stress and anxiety. In medieval Europe, veronica was associated with magic and sorcery. It was used in amulets and spells to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck. In Celtic culture, veronica was a symbol of eternity and immortality. The plant was used in Celtic rites and traditions associated with the festivals of the sun.

Veronica. Legends, myths, history

Veronica

It seems that none of our gardens could do without Veronica. Veronica is definitely not a prima, but a lovely girl from the corps de ballet, able to gracefully shade and / or emphasize the splendor of other colors.

They say that once upon a time such flowers did not exist in the world. There were no veronicas, neither filamentous, nor Persian, nor spiky, nor alpine - in a word, none! And in one village there lived a girl who loved a young man without memory and was going to marry him, so that everything would be like people have: a house - a full bowl, children, grandchildren ... But the young man fell ill and began to wither day by day, and no medicines could help him. The girl turned to the local healer with a request to give her a herb that could cure her beloved, but he replied that such a herb does not exist in the world.

The girl fell to the ground in despair and turned into a previously unknown pale green plant with blue flowers. The healer prepared a decoction from the plant, gave it to the young man to drink, and a miracle happened - the dying man recovered.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

With a lack of oxygen, cell aging begins even before birth. 13.03.2016

Scientists led by Professor Dino Giussani from the University of Cambridge found that the aging process of body cells begins even in the prenatal period of its development. At the same time, it is possible to influence the rate of future aging with the help of antioxidants.

In the study, the researchers measured telomere lengths in the blood vessel cells of adult laboratory rats born to mothers who took and did not take antioxidants during normal or complicated pregnancies. Telomeres are the end sections of chromosomes, the depletion of which is associated with the aging process of the cell. The most common complication during pregnancy is a decrease in the amount of oxygen supplied to the fetus. In the case of humans, the reason for this may be, for example, smoking during pregnancy. To mimic this complication in rats, the researchers placed a group of rats in a room containing 7% less oxygen than normal.

They found that adult rats born to mothers who received less oxygen during pregnancy had shorter telomeres. In addition, they had problems with the inner lining of blood vessels, which means that these individuals had a higher predisposition for the development of cardiovascular diseases. Antioxidant supplements taken by these pregnant women helped reduce the risk of developing heart disease. Those individuals whose mothers received enough oxygen during pregnancy also benefited from these supplements - their telomeres turned out to be longer.

Thus, scientists for the first time came to the conclusion that it is possible to influence the rate of aging of the body already during its intrauterine development, and the supply of oxygen plays the main role in this process, apparently. Although the results are from rats, the researchers believe that similar mechanisms are at work in humans.
