Stomatitis is an inflammation of the oral mucosa of a child. In infants, the mucous membrane is very thin and delicate, so it is easily injured. In addition, fungi of the genus Candida can cause stomatitis. Stomatitis manifests itself as follows: a white coating appears on the tongue and mucous membranes of the mouth. The child becomes restless, eats poorly, slowly gains weight.

There are viral and microbial stomatitis. The cause of the first is often the herpes virus. Children aged 1 to 3 years are especially sensitive to it. The virus is transmitted by airborne droplets, through dishes, toys, household items. Viral stomatitis can cause influenza viruses, measles, chicken pox, adenovirus infection. Children of preschool and school age often have stomatitis of microbial origin, which develop with tonsillitis, sinusitis, pneumonia.

Stomatitis can also have allergic roots.

Traumatic stomatitis develops as a result of burns with hot drinks: tea or milk, as well as biting lips, tongue, cheeks, damage to the mucous membranes of the mouth with a pencil, toys (toys with nitro paints are especially dangerous). Breastfeeding babies can injure their mucous membrane with a too stiff and long nipple.

Long-term non-healing stomatitis leads to a decrease in the child's immunity.

Symptoms of acute herpetic stomatitis

Eruptions appear on the lips.

The temperature rises to 38-39°C.

The child becomes capricious, lethargic, loses appetite.

Catarrhal phenomena may begin: runny nose, cough.

On the second or third day, aphthae appear in the oral cavity on the mucous membranes of the cheeks, lips, tongue, the gums swell and bleed, and bad breath occurs.

A small child refuses to eat (it hurts to eat).

The appearance of sores on the oral mucosa - small white plaques.

When to see a doctor

When ulcers appear in the mouth.

What to do before the doctor arrives

1. For the first 3-4 days, rinse your mouth often, every 2-3 hours, especially after eating. For rinsing, use a decoction of calendula, sage, chamomile or oak bark. For small children, irrigate the mouth with a small rubber bulb while tilting the child's head down over the bowl. It is better for a baby of the first year of life to do this procedure by turning the head to one side.

2. After rinsing, the oral mucosa is smeared with an oily solution of vitamin A, rosehip or sea buckthorn oil. For herpetic stomatitis, 0,25% oxolinic ointment is used. Ointments and oil solutions are applied to the mucous membrane of the lips and mouth with a cotton swab wound on a wooden stick or a metal, but not sharp spatula.

3. If the child's lips are covered with dry scales, then before applying the ointment, soften them in an oil solution or in a weak solution of pale pink potassium permanganate, applying cotton wool soaked in the solution to the lips.

4. The child should eat 4 times a day with 3-4 hour breaks (no snacks!). This is necessary so that the drugs have time to be absorbed into the mucous membrane, and it is not injured once again. Feed your child with slimy soups on vegetable broths, mashed boiled vegetables, well-boiled cereals, meat and fish steam cutlets and meatballs. All food should be warm, not cold or hot, salty, sour and sweet dishes are completely excluded.

5. Give your child fruit juices, jelly, rosehip broth.

ATTENTION!

In debilitated premature babies, even a regular nipple can cause damage to the palate mucosa, which causes small sores. Over time, they gradually increase, merge with each other, acquiring the shape of a butterfly. Therefore, for feeding a child, choose the shortest hard rubber nipple - while sucking, it will not injure the palate mucosa.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Microplastics make soil less fertile 14.09.2019

The negative impact of plastic waste on the ocean is already well known. New research shows that this pollutant can also make the soil significantly less fertile.

Scientists from Anglia Ruskin University (UK) found that microplastics retard the growth of worms. Given the role of these animals in saturating the soil with nutrients, any interference with their activities can have a serious negative impact on entire ecosystems and hinder the growth of crops that humans feed on.

Exposure to plastic, commonly found in bottles and bags, caused earthworms to lose 3,1% of their body weight over a 30-day period, according to a new study. During the same period, earthworms in plastic-free soil increased their mass by 5,1%.

This is a concern because worms are "ecosystem engineers": they ingest dead organic matter, improve soil structure, promote drainage, and even prevent erosion. If worms lose mass and stunted, this can seriously damage biodiversity.

Researchers don't yet know the specific reasons why microplastics cause worms to lose weight. Perhaps the reaction of earthworms to plastic can be compared with the same mechanisms in aquatic worms that have previously been studied. In aquatic worms, microplastics cause obstruction and irritation of the digestive tract, making it harder for the animals to absorb nutrients and slowing down their growth.

Any pollution that affects the health of earthworms can negatively affect other aspects of the soil ecosystem, such as plant growth.
