Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Super stable laser makes GPS more accurate 23.04.2012

Physicists from the Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics (JILA) have demonstrated a new type of laser that is 100 to 1000 times more frequency stable than a conventional one. This type of laser can improve the accuracy of state-of-the-art atomic clocks and related technologies such as communications and navigation systems, and space-based astronomical instruments.

The prototype laser is based on a million rubidium atoms, which perform a kind of synchronized dance and produce a dull dark red laser beam. The new laser is actually a kind of optical phased array antenna, in which the electromagnetic waves of a large group of identical antennas are carefully synchronized and create a wave with unique properties. A conventional laser is based on millions of photons that ricochet between two mirrors, hitting atoms and generating intense light. Unfortunately, due to the movements of the atoms and the vibration of the mirrors, the frequency of the laser beam constantly changes, which makes it difficult to use it, for example, for high-precision measurements.

The new laser from JILA does not have this drawback, since photons do not linger in it for a long time. Atoms constantly emit synchronized photons, but in very small numbers. In this case, almost all photons fly away before they collide with mirrors and disrupt the synchronized dance of atoms. This was made possible thanks to a unique system that holds atoms between two mirrors, and then, using low-power lasers, adjusts the speed of switching atoms between two energy levels. Atoms emit photons every time their energy level drops. Normally, an atom emits only one photon per second, but thanks to a system developed at JILA, the rate of switching energy states is increased by a factor of 10.

The new laser shines much weaker than the most common cheap laser pointer. However, it is ideal for applications where precise frequency control is required, such as GPS atomic clocks, optical communications systems, advanced surveying instruments, and astronomy.
