Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Gasoline from sugar 17.07.2015

A lot has been written about the ingress of sugar into gasoline, including the consequences that are not as serious as it seems. But still, according to tradition, it is believed that gasoline and sugar are incompatible things. An end to prejudice may come from the announcement just made by Audi that it is starting to test a new synthetic fuel called e-benzin, which is derived from sugar.

Of course, not refined sugar for home consumption is used as a raw material, but glucose obtained from biomass. Such for the French company Global Bioenergies, which developed the technology, are both corn and beets, as well as waste from agriculture and forestry. With the help of genetically modified microorganisms in an unknown way, inside which "atypical metabolic mediators" carry out "undescribed enzymatic reactions" (sic), the output is isobutylene - an unsaturated hydrocarbon isomeric to butylene gas.

Isobutylene is used as a feedstock for the production of various fuels, plastics, paints and synthetic rubbers. Getting it from renewable biomass allows, in theory, to abandon the use of fossil raw materials like oil, with all the ensuing consequences. In addition, the technology using fermentation tanks, which are beautifully called "bioreactors", lends itself to any scaling, and therefore (again, so far in theory) it is possible to establish fuel production at any sawmill.

The manufacturing company reports that in its technology it has managed to overcome the main problem of the traditional fermentation process - the accumulation of liquid in the reactor, which poisons the microorganisms that carry out the fermentation. In Global Bioenergies bioreactors, the finished product is immediately vaporized and then removed from the general gaseous medium containing isobutylene, carbon dioxide and steam using conventional methods. After that, Audi engineers get down to business, who receive isooctane from isobutylene.

Isooctane is now used as an anti-knock additive in gasoline, but Audi says it can also be used as "e-gasoline", which burns clean due to the absence of sulfur and gasoline itself. In the future, engineers at Audi and Global Bioenergies are promising to move away from sugar and produce the next as yet unnamed fuel using water, hydrogen, carbon dioxide and sunlight.
