Safe Operation

Safety requirements

1. Safety rope - a means of collective protection designed to secure one or more safety belts working with a carbine when working at height, consisting of a flexible steel rope located horizontally or with an inclination of up to 7°, the ends of which are fixedly fixed to the structural elements of buildings and structures directly or through special elements.

The rope is equipped with a device for attaching it to structural elements of buildings and structures, tensioning it and changing its length depending on the distance between the attachment points.

2. Ropes must be manufactured according to standards or specifications for ropes of specific designs. It is prohibited to use ropes manufactured at work sites without drawings or standards (in a handicraft manner).

The design of the rope must exclude the possibility of injury to the worker’s hands. Rope parts must not have tears, burrs, sharp edges, cracks or holes.

3. When making a safety rope, the steel rope must be marked with the following indication:

  • number, trademark (or name of the manufacturer);
  • values of static breaking force;
  • date of manufacture (month, year);
  • test dates (month, year);
  • designation of the standard or technical specifications according to which the rope is made.

4. The rope should be installed above or at the level of the support plane for the feet.

The installation height of each rope from the plane of the support for the feet is determined by measuring with a metal ruler at the places where it is attached at the ends, and the distance between the points of attachment for a rope length of more than 12 m is determined with a steel tape measure.

5. In general, when choosing the installation height of a safety rope, the following safety rules should be observed: the installation height must be at least 1,5 m from the surface of the support for the feet when walking under a tensioned rope (trusses, beams, crossbars and similar structures with shelves up to 300 mm wide) and no more than 1,2 m when crossing away from the rope (crane beams).

6 To tension the safety rope, you must first roll it out (the safety rope is stored wound into a coil) on the workshop floor (ground), then alternately raise its ends to a height and securely fasten them using tension devices to the outer structures. Pre-tension it using a tension coupling until the slack is completely removed. Then the rope is laid in hooks pre-fixed to intermediate structures every 6 - 12 m, and final tension is applied to impart the required force to the rope.

7. Walking along the upper chords of steel trusses, as well as along the upper and lower chords of prefabricated reinforced concrete trusses and roof beams is prohibited. In some cases, when necessary, such movement is allowed in the “sitting-crawl” position by the size of one panel (1,5 +/- 3 m), attached with a safety belt to the upper belt of the truss or a safety rope.

8. When the length of the rope is more than 12 m, intermediate supports must be installed, the distance between which should not be more than 12 m, and the surface of the intermediate support with which the rope comes into contact should not have sharp edges.

The intermediate support and its fastening points must be designed for a vertical static load of at least 500 kg.

9. The static breaking force of a steel rope installed at a height of more than 1,2 m from the plane of support of the worker’s feet must not be less than 4040 kg, and a rope installed at a height of up to 1,2 m must not be less than 5600 kg.

10. For the manufacture of safety ropes intended for installation at a height of more than 1,3 m from the plane of support for the feet, steel ropes with a diameter of 8,8 mm, 9,1 mm and 9,7 mm are used; and for a rope installed at a height of up to 1,2 m - steel ropes with a diameter of 10,5 mm and 11,0 mm.

The use of ropes from other materials must be justified by standards or technical specifications for ropes of specific designs.

11. When installing the rope above the plane of the support for the feet, it is necessary to pre-tension it with a force of 100 kg to 400 kg, depending on the distance between the points of fastening the rope.

Pre-tensioning of the rope is carried out before installing it on intermediate supports. The force on the handle when tensioning the rope should not exceed 16 kg.

The amount of pre-tension should be controlled by the amount of sag in the middle of the span of the tensioned rope in accordance with the table:

Distance between fixing points, m Rope pretension value, N (kgf) Controlled amount of rope sag in the middle of the span, mm, with rope diameter, mm
8,8; 9,1; 9,7 10,5; 11,0
12 1000 (100) 55 75
24 1000 (100) 220 300
36 2000 (200) 240 340
48 3000 (300) 280 400
60 4000 (400) 330 480

12. When installing a rope at the level of the support plane for the feet, you should not pre-tension it, and the length of the rope is selected in such a way that the rope fixed at the ends and tensioned in the middle with a force of 10 kg does not extend beyond the overall dimensions of the structural elements on which it is installed.

13. The fastening parts of the steel rope, as well as structural elements of buildings or other devices to which it is attached, must be designed for a horizontally applied load equal to 2200 kg and acting for 0,5 s.

14. The rope before operation, as well as every 6 months during operation, must be tested with a static load applied in the middle of the span by a load weighing 400 kg, which is applied to the rope installed in the working position through flexible ropes (nylon or steel) or a steel rod.

15. Upon completion of work at height, the safety rope is removed, lubricated, rolled into a coil and stored.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

The hygroscopicity of hyaluronic acid is exaggerated 20.03.2024

The myth that hyaluronic acid can hold 1000 times its own weight in water has been exaggerated. However, this does not detract from its usefulness for the skin and body tissues, since it has other valuable properties, such as antioxidant effects and stimulation of cell regeneration.

Hyaluronic acid, an essential element for the body's cells and tissues, has become known for its skin-improving and inter-articular lubrication properties. However, advertising claims of its ability to hold 1000 times its own weight in water have been questioned.

American scientists conducted an experiment, creating a solution with hyaluronic acid and water in a ratio of 1:1000. The results showed that the solution did not change its behavior when heated, contrary to marketing promises.

However, the experiment was only performed with medium-sized molecules, so the conclusions can be considered limited to products with such molecules. Perhaps the use of larger molecules would have led to different results.

In addition, hyaluronic acid not only has the ability to retain water, but also has antioxidant properties, promotes cell regeneration and stimulates collagen production. Research shows that products with different sizes of hyaluronic acid molecules and a minimum concentration of 0,1% are better for the skin, since small molecules penetrate the skin better and larger molecules retain more water.
