Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The tallest wooden wind generator 03.01.2024

Modvion, a renewable energy startup, has completed the installation of a 150-meter wind turbine made from wood. This wind generator is the tallest in the world today. Its modular spruce wood design allows it to be manufactured and assembled on site.

The Modvion Wooden Wind Turbine is an innovative solution for creating tall and efficient wind turbines while taking environmental aspects into account. Its use holds the promise of reducing dependence on steel and creating carbon-negative renewable energy technologies.

At a time when manufacturers are setting records for the height of wind turbines, reaching 252 m in 24 hours, the Modvion wooden wind generator looks like an innovative solution. Taller turbines, while offering greater blade span and wind-capture efficiency, face severe limitations due to the use of steel in their design.

Modvion uses thin layers of veneer to create the thick walls of the wind turbines and glue to form the curved sections of the tower. These curved sections are easily transported and assembled on site, allowing taller towers to be built using less material. Manufactured using only wood and glue, steel fittings hold the components together.

This approach can be used using steel, but assembling the curved sections on site adds cost and makes maintenance difficult. In addition, wood is a carbon-negative solution, as the trees used in production absorb carbon dioxide and trap it until it finally decomposes.
