Key innovations for the next 10 years

15.07.2014

Analysts at Intellectual Property & Science, a division of Thomson Reuters, have released the report The World in 2025: Ten Future Innovations (PDF). It contains a forecast of the development of science and technology by 2025, based on an analysis of trends in the patent and scientific literature.

According to the forecast, by 2025 in the world everything that is possible, from personal items to continents, will be connected to each other by digital communications. This will be possible thanks to the improvement of semiconductor technologies, the introduction of graphene supercapacitors, non-discrete networks and 5G technology.

It is assumed that by 2025 experiments on quantum teleportation will become widespread in the scientific community.

In order to meet the growing demand for electricity to power devices and continents, people will turn to solar power. "According to the most cited scientific publications over the past two years, the production and use of solar energy will not only be engaged in environmental fighters. Thanks to the technologies of photovoltaics, chemical bonding and photocatalysis, the use of solar energy will become massive," the report contains.

The experts also touched upon the topic of transport. They predict that by 2025 there will be cars on the roads and planes in the sky. But they will become much smarter and lighter, run on batteries and travel longer distances than today. This will be facilitated by advances in lithium-ion and thin-film batteries, hydrogen fuel cells and nanomaterials.

“Light aircraft and automobiles will be powered by improved lithium-ion batteries. Aircraft will be constructed from new materials, lighter weight, and powered by new engines based on superconducting technology. Small commercial aircraft will be widely used for short flights. the right to drive a car, but a license to operate such an aircraft," the report says.

A large number of innovations are expected in the healthcare sector. Experts believe that by 2025, people will be much more effective at preventing the development of dementia and Alzheimer's disease thanks to an understanding of the human genome and genetic mutations. Thanks to advances in DNA and RNA engineering, by 2025 medicine will be able to defeat type XNUMX and type XNUMX diabetes.

At the birth of a person, a map of his DNA will be created. The analysis of the human genome will remain one of the most important scientific areas. More than a thousand citations have been found on this topic. Advances in nanotechnology and big data technologies about living organisms will find their application in ultra-precise diagnostics at the cellular level.

Significant progress will also be made in the treatment of cancer. Scientists will learn how to target cancer cells, so that patients do not have to use chemotherapy with its detrimental side effect. The negative effects of cancer treatment will be much less.

Experts also predict a complete rejection by 2025 of packaging made from petroleum products (vegetable raw materials will be used instead) and a complete solution to the problem of crop failures in the agricultural sector, with the resulting regular fluctuations in food prices in various markets.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Pressure and vibration make injections painless 26.10.2014

According to scientists from the University of Saskatchewan (Canada), every tenth person suffers from trypanophobia - the fear of needles and injections. Researchers are working to help them.

Canadian scientists believe that using a device that would apply pressure and vibration to the skin before a needle prick can help patients significantly reduce pain.

They studied the reaction to pressure, vibrations, cooling or heating of the skin in 21 adults, causing them to experience pain similar to a needle prick (in the experiment, a plastic needle was used). It turned out that the perception of pain was significantly reduced when a certain amount of pressure and vibration was applied for 20 seconds before the injection. Heat exposure also conferred a small benefit, but it was not statistically significant.
