Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Viruses are 10 times stronger in the morning than in the evening 24.08.2016

Circadian rhythms - fluctuations in the intensity of processes occurring in the body during the day - often affect our susceptibility to various diseases. It is known, for example, that the violation of these rhythms (disturbed day regimen, night shift work, change of time zones) lead to chronic diseases. Until recently, scientists did not know what is the relationship between the time of day and the body's ability to resist bacteria and viruses.

To shed light on this question, scientists from the University of Cambridge conducted several experiments on mice and individual cells. It turned out that viral diseases (experiments were conducted with influenza and herpes viruses) feel as much as 10 times better in the infected body in the morning than in the evening. Violation of circadian rhythms leads to a decrease in resistance to viruses.

Viruses penetrate the cells of an infected organism and are integrated into the processes taking place in them. The physiology of the cell and many processes in it are subject to daily fluctuations. That is why, as scientists have found, the time of day affects whether the virus will be able to cope with the cell or not.

About 10% of all genes of the organism are somehow involved in the daily regulation of the intensity of internal processes. For observation, the scientists chose the Bmal1 gene, which is present in both mice and humans. This gene is much less active during the morning hours, which gives the viruses a big advantage.

One of the authors of the study, Akilesh Reddy (Akhilesh Reddy) noted: “The virus needs all the necessary systems to be alerted, otherwise it will never be able to integrate into the cell’s metabolism. However, even a weak infection in the morning has a chance to become successful and infect the entire organism."

Although the researchers conducted experiments with only two types of viruses, their fundamental differences from each other suggest that the law "a virus is 10 times more dangerous in the morning than in the evening" works for other viruses as well.
