К fire hazardsaffecting people and material values include:

  • flames and sparks;
  • heat flow;
  • increased ambient temperature;
  • increased concentration of toxic products of combustion and thermal decomposition;
  • reduced oxygen concentration;
  • increased concentration of smoke along escape routes.

К secondary consequences of exposure to fire hazards building structures, technological equipment and fire extinguishing actions that are harmful to human life and health, material values include:

  • fragments, parts of collapsed devices, units, installations, structures;
  • radioactive and toxic substances and materials released from destroyed devices and installations;
  • removal of high voltage to conductive parts of structures, devices, units;
  • dangerous factors of an explosion that occurred as a result of a fire;
  • the impact of fire extinguishing agents and the actions of fire departments to extinguish fires.

One of the fire hazards is reduced oxygen content, since the combustion process occurs with the intensive absorption of oxygen. Therefore, in a fire, oxygen starvation can occur. When the oxygen content in the air is 16-18%, there is a rapid heartbeat, a slight disorder in coordination of movements; slightly reduced ability to think. At 9% of the oxygen content in the breathing zone, loss of consciousness occurs, at 6% - death in minutes. It is important to know that a person does not feel oxygen starvation and cannot take measures to save himself. The maximum oxygen content in fire conditions is 17%.

A very dangerous fire factor is carbon monoxide CO toxic to humans (carbon monoxide, or carbon monoxide). Under normal conditions, CO is a flammable, colorless and odorless gas. Under the influence of CO, the blood loses its ability to absorb oxygen. MPC content CO - 0,1%. This causes headache, nausea, general malaise. Inhalation of air with 0,5% carbon monoxide for 20-30 minutes leads to death. When inhaling air containing 1% CO, death occurs in 1-2 minutes.

Another dangerous gas for humans, resulting from the complete thermal decomposition of combustible materials, is carbon dioxide CO2 (carbon dioxide) It has neither color nor smell, but has a sour taste. Inhalation of air containing up to 6-8% CO2leads to rapid and deeper breathing, causes tinnitus, headache, palpitations. A person loses consciousness when inhaling a mixture of 21% oxygen and 10% CO2. Maximum permissible value of CO2 - 6%.

CO poisoning2 can occur even when extinguishing a fire with carbon dioxide fire extinguishers (especially for small rooms), as well as when entering a room after CO is supplied there2 automatic installation of carbon dioxide fire extinguishing.

Increased temperature air and objects poses a real threat to human life and health in a fire.

Smoke is an extremely dangerous fire factor, since a person loses orientation in the smoke, while the time spent in extreme conditions increases, including conditions of increasing content of carbon monoxide and dioxide, rising air temperature and thermal radiation. Smoke is measured by the attenuation of light per unit length. The permissible value of the indicator is 2,4.

Fire and explosion hazards are collapsing structures, equipment, communications, buildings, structures and their flying parts.

The most dangerous explosion factor - the pressure of the blast wave, destroying structures and killing people.

Blinking of the magician and his audience 19.05.2024

Magic and illusions have always captured the attention of the public, but what happens behind the scenes of the magician and in the brains of his audience? Scientists from the UK decided to solve this mystery by conducting a new study involving ten illusionists of varying experience. Illusionists, some of whom had been practicing magic for more than half a century, others for only six months, were invited to demonstrate the same trick - the popular coin trick. Recordings of their performances during training and on stage showed that each of them began to blink significantly more often at the moment of performing the trick. The study's findings indicate that magicians' blink rate may be related to unconscious aspects of their performance. At the same time, as scientists have found, spectators also begin to blink more often, following the movements of the illusionist. This observation supports the idea that magicians may be catalysts for blinking in audiences. Additional research has shown that magicians blink more often during ... >>

Ultrasonic coffee machine 19.05.2024

Iced coffee has become an integral part of coffee culture in recent years. Therefore, engineers from the University of New South Wales decided to improve its preparation. They have developed an ultrasonic coffee machine that reduces the cold brew time for ground coffee beans from 12-24 hours to significantly less time. Iced coffee, or "Cold brew", is popular due to its smoothness, low acidity and low bitterness. It is prepared by steeping ground coffee in cold water for a long time. Unlike traditional hot brewing, which often imparts bitterness to coffee, cold brewing extracts more delicate and complex flavors from the coffee beans. The innovative system, presented by a team of engineers, introduces ultrasonic technology into the coffee preparation process. The system uses ultrasonic waves to speed up the process of extracting oils, flavor and aroma from ground coffee. This allows you to significantly reduce the time ... >>

The speech of sperm whales is similar to that of humans 18.05.2024

In the world of the ocean, where the mysterious and unknown coexists with the studied, sperm whales, with their huge brains, are of particular interest to science. Researchers, working with a huge array of audio recordings collected during the Dominica Sperm Whale Project (DSWP) - more than 8000 recordings, seek to unravel the secrets of their communication and understand the structure and complexity of the language of these mysterious creatures. By studying in detail the recordings of 60 sperm whales in the eastern Caribbean, scientists have revealed surprising features of their communication, revealing the complexity of their language. "Our observations indicate that these whales have a highly developed combinatorial communication system, including rubato and ornaments, which indicates their ability to quickly adapt and vary during communication. Despite significant differences in evolution, sperm whales have elements in their communication that are characteristic of human communication," says Shane Gero, a biologist at Carleton University and director of the CETI project. The crowd has a collective mind 30.09.2019

This conclusion was reached by a group of American ichthyologists who studied the reaction of North American schooling fish to frightening stimuli. It turned out that this depends not so much on the sensitivity of individual individuals, but on the configuration of the pack as a whole.

The object of study in this case was the golden notemigonus (Notemigonus crysoleucas) - a freshwater fish widespread in the waters of North America, vaguely resembling our roach, but noticeably larger - up to 30 cm in length. Notemigonuses stay in packs and, as it should be herbivores, they are afraid of predators. Noticing those nearby, the fish try to move away as far as possible.

Scientists imitated being a predator nearby by introducing a drug called schreckstoff into the water - a mixture of substances released from the skin of a fish when it is damaged. For other fish, this is a sure sign that a predator is somewhere nearby, having just eaten someone, and probably looking for the next prey.

It turned out that the reaction rate of a flock of notemigonus depends not so much on the sensitivity of individual individuals, but on the configuration of the flock. The smaller the distance between individual fish, the faster they became frightened.

“Increasing the sensitivity of each individual to risk can lead to an excessive number of false positives that spread throughout the group,” says one of the authors of the study, Ian Cousin. On the other hand, strengthening social ties in the group allows you to accelerate risk awareness, but this mechanism becomes overly sensitive. .
