The danger of electric shock differs from many other dangers in that a person is not able to detect it at a distance without special devices and take measures to avoid it. Electric injury statistics in Russia shows that fatal electric shocks account for 2,7% of the total number of deaths, which is disproportionately high compared to injuries in general. This means that electrical injuries are predominantly fatal.

According to the PUE all electrical installations according to electrical safety conditions usually divided into 2 groups:

  • electrical installations with voltage up to 1000V (1 kV);
  • electrical installations with voltages above 1000V (1 kV).

It should be noted that the number of accidents in electrical installations with voltages up to 1000V is three times higher than in electrical installations with voltages above 1000V.

This is due to the fact that installations with voltages up to 1000V are used more widely, as well as the fact that more people come into contact with electrical equipment, as a rule, who do not have an electrical specialty. Electrical equipment above 1000V is less common, and only highly qualified electrical personnel are allowed to service it.

The most common causes of electrical injury are:

  • the appearance of voltage where it should not be under normal conditions (on equipment cases, on metal structures of structures, etc.); most often this occurs due to insulation damage;
  • the possibility of touching uninsulated current-carrying parts in the absence of appropriate guards;
  • the impact of an electric arc that occurs between a current-carrying part and a person in networks with a voltage above 1000V, if a person is in close proximity to the current-carrying parts;
  • other reasons: inconsistent and erroneous actions of personnel, supplying voltage to an installation where people work, leaving the installation energized without supervision, admission to work on disconnected electrical equipment without checking for a lack of voltage, etc.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Walking speed measurement without wearable devices 08.05.2017

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab has found a way to measure walking speeds with 95 to 99% accuracy without the need for additional wearable devices. WiGait technology uses wireless signals sent by devices like routers. Such devices can be located in different parts of the house.

The WiGait system is designed for home use: you can install it in any convenient place so that it does not interfere at all. It constantly measures walking speed and stride length, and the user does not need to wear any device and, accordingly, worry about charging.

The ability to track walking speed is of great benefit to clinical research. There is growing evidence that this indicator helps predict health problems. The ability to notice changes in stride length also helps identify certain medical conditions, such as Parkinson's disease.

WiGait stands out from other solutions in this area because it does not require any wearable devices and does not involve cameras, which can also be useful, but often have a number of privacy problems. The patient is much more comfortable when his steps are monitored by a simple sensor, and not by the eye of the camera, which, even at a subconscious level, can be perceived as a surveillance device.

The development has great therapeutic potential in long-term care and geriatric medicine. Interest in a field that specializes in diseases of the senile age is growing as the average life expectancy increases, but at the same time, the demographic aging of the population is taking place.
