When solving problems protection from energy influences allocate a source, a receiver of energy and a protective device that reduces the flow of energy to the receiver to acceptable levels.

Protective device has the ability to reflect, absorb, be transparent with respect to the flow of energy and is characterized by energy absorption coefficients, reflections, transmission coefficient. Therefore, the following principles of protection can be distinguished:

1) protection is carried out due to the reflectivity of protective devices;

2) protection is carried out due to the absorption capacity of the protective device;

3) protection is carried out taking into account the transparency properties of protective devices.

In practice, the principles are usually combine, receiving various methods of protection (in particular, isolation and absorption).

Isolation Methods are used when the source and receiver of energy, which is simultaneously the object of protection, are located on different sides of the protective device. These methods are based on reducing the transparency of the medium between the source and the receiver. In this case, two main methods of isolation can be distinguished: a decrease in the transparency of the medium is achieved due to the absorption of energy or due to the high reflectivity of the protective device.

At the heart absorption methods lies the principle of increasing the flow of energy passed into the protective device. There are two types of energy absorption by a protective device: energy absorption by the protective device itself due to its selection from the source in one form or another, including in the form of irreversible losses, and energy absorption due to the high transparency of the protective device.

For example, when exposed to such a hazard factor as vibration, inertia, friction, elasticity and forcing forces act in the vibrosystem. Used for vibration protection vibration isolation method, when a vibration isolator with a low transmission coefficient is installed between the vibration source and its receiver, which is also the object of protection.

Vibration protection by absorption methods is carried out in the form dynamic damping and vibration absorption. In the first case, the vibration energy is absorbed by a protective device that takes the vibration energy from the source onto itself (there is an inertial dynamic vibration damper). A protective device that increases energy dissipation by increasing the dissipative properties of the system is called a vibration absorber. It is possible to combine these two properties at the same time using dynamic vibration dampers with friction.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

The Danger of Dirty Windows 04.11.2022

Scientists from the University of Birmingham called for washing dirty windows. They argue that windows can contain toxic contaminants and hide potentially harmful contaminants behind a film of fatty acids from food preparations that can be stored for long periods of time.

Fatty acids present in cooking emissions are very stable and difficult to break down in the atmosphere. And when they hit a hard surface like a window, they create a thin, self-organizing and slowly accumulating film, and can only be gradually broken down by other chemicals in the atmosphere.

Thus, the film will become rougher and draw out more water due to air humidity. In addition, harmful contaminants can enter the resilient crust, where they are then protected from degradation in the atmosphere.

The fatty acids in these films are not particularly harmful on their own, but because they are not broken down, they effectively protect any other contaminants that might be trapped underneath.

During the study, the team worked on lab proxy material samples designed in the lab to get closer to real world samples. They were twisted into ultrathin films of pollution only a few tens of nanometers thick.

The researchers used both neutrons and X-rays to study the nanoscale composition of the films and changes in surface structures. They changed the humidity and the amount of ozone, a key indoor and outdoor pollutant.

As a result, it was found that the self-organized arrangement within the films in the form of repeating molecular layers - the so-called lamellar phase - makes it difficult for smaller molecules, such as ozone, to access the reactive parts of fatty acids within these structures.
