A toy boat with a jet engine. Tips for a modeller

In 1922, the Soviet inventor K.K. Kosmind-Yushenko proposed the design of a toy boat with an unusual jet engine. Take a look at the top picture. A curved tube, open at both ends, is embedded in the bottom of the boat. This is the engine. The lower opening of the tube communicates with the pool. Therefore, the middle, horizontal section, which is slightly thinner than the water level, is always filled. If it is heated, steam is formed, which, escaping from the hole in the pipe, will create jet thrust ...

What is the novelty? And that now it is not necessary to load the working fluid on board. It is full around - have time to pick it up! You will undoubtedly appreciate the advantage of the new scheme by building a boat yourself.

A good engine for our model will come from a copper tube with a diameter of 4-6 mm. It is better to make the boat itself out of tin, and solder the engine into a hole made in the bottom. To make it work better, solder the lower inlet with a tin circle, and then make a hole in it. Its diameter should be about 6 times smaller than the engine outlet. Experiment will tell you more exact dimensions. And another very important condition. The inlet should be under water at a depth of about 5 cm, and a horizontal section just below its level.

In this form, the boat is suitable for playing in a quiet pond or in a bath. The fuel for it can be "dry alcohol" or the stub of a candle. But the engine, in principle, allows you to get very high speeds. A possible version of the velocity model is shown in the figure below.

The main thing in it is the curved engine pipe (1), shown in section. It has a special cross section. The water flowing during the movement of the boat, passing through a smoothly outlined inlet, slows down the speed, thereby increasing the pressure. Due to this, high pressure and temperature steam can be obtained in the pipe. Flowing out at almost supersonic speed, it creates significant thrust.

But it is also necessary to provide that at the exit the cross section of the pipe first decreases, and then smoothly expands, as in the nozzles of steam turbines. Otherwise, supersonic speed cannot be achieved.

The entire engine is located inside the furnace and its chimney (2). The jet of steam sucks the products of combustion in the pipe, and a powerful thrust arises in the furnace. This allows you to burn fuel at high speed. After all, such an engine needs a lot of heat.

Therefore, a primus burner or a blowtorch is best suited for the firebox.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

China's high-tech development 01.01.2015

The Chinese market for high-tech products will grow rapidly - these are just one of the top five predictions for the industry for 2015, which were given by analysts at IDC in a special report.

In 2015, almost 500 million smartphones will be sold in China, which is three times more than in the United States and corresponds to a third of the entire global market for these devices, IDC experts say. They estimate that China in 2015 will account for 43% of the growth in spending on information and communication technology. By the end of the year, more than 680 million people in China will be connected to the Network, which will exceed the US figure by 2,5 times. This will be facilitated by the implementation of the national Broadband China Project, which aims to provide broadband connectivity to 95% of the country's urban population. In total, in 2015, China will allocate more than $465 billion for information and communication technologies, increasing these expenditures by 11% compared to this year.

As for the other IDC predictions, they are:

Global spending on information and communication technologies will grow by 3,8% and exceed 3,8 trillion dollars, and in the segment of the "third platform", which analysts include cloud and mobile technologies, as well as social networks and big data, the growth will be 13% .

The smartphone and tablet market will reach $484 billion, accounting for 40% of the industry's turnover growth. Tablet phones will enjoy growing popularity, as a result of which their share in total smartphone sales will increase from 11% (this year's figure) to 18%.

IoT spending will exceed $1,7 trillion, up 14% from 2014, and the number of IoT devices will reach 15 billion. By the way, by 2020 these figures will increase to 3 trillion dollars and 30 billion pieces, respectively. Cisco Systems, IBM and Intel will form a joint venture to provide industrial solutions in this category.

The big data and analytics market will reach $125 billion. Wireless data transmission will become the largest segment of the telecommunications market, amounting to $536 billion in monetary terms. In combination, this segment will also be the fastest growing, demonstrating an increase of 13%.
