SAMSUNG SGH-T100. Mobile phone review
Review
Samsung SGH-T100 is an authorized representative of a large family of clamshell phones expected on the market in the very near future. The task of this model is to demonstrate to the whole world the possibilities of the new generation of devices from Samsung. For the first time in a GSM-phone from this manufacturer, a lot of attention is paid not only to the design of the device, but also to its software stuffing, in particular, to the interface. By design, this is a typical clamshell with dimensions of 88x50x22.9 mm with a thin battery (with an increased capacity battery, the thickness increases by 5 mm) and a weight of 108 grams versus 94 with a thin one. The SGH-T100 is available in silver, no other color options are available. When the device is closed, the user sees only an external display with a blue backlight and a sufficiently high resolution of 64x46 pixels, which allows you to display up to 3 lines of information, including not only the traditional information about the signal level, battery charge, time and date, but also information about calls, reminders from the organizer. If the number does not fit on the screen entirely during an incoming call, it scrolls smoothly. Just below the display, several slots in the case are visible - this is a speaker that plays music while receiving a call or other events. The appearance of a separate speaker is connected with the support of 100-voice polyphonic melodies implemented in the T16. Previously, such melodies were not used in clamshell phones, so Samsung SGH-T100 is the first sign in this respect. Next to the antenna is a service indicator with several backlight colors. On the left side surface there is a double volume rocker, in the upper end there is a connector for connecting a headset, which, by the way, is included in the package. Finally, at the back you will see a connector for an external antenna, covered with a rubber plug. So let's open the phone. It is quite easy to do this: the mechanism is not tight; in the open state, the phone does not dangle, all parts are securely fixed - it seemed to me that even with time there should not be any problems with the design. The first thing that catches your eye is, of course, a screen with a resolution of 128x160 pixels and displaying up to 4096 colors. The display accommodates up to 6 text lines of 16 characters each, as well as a title line and labels for soft keys. Knowing that color screens don't perform well in bright sunlight, I used the phone in those conditions as often as possible. Yes, indeed, the information becomes less readable, but the screen does not go blind. In addition, you can always use an external display (all information is duplicated on it), and it is visible well in any light. You can talk about the screen for a long time. Color really changes a lot, and those who say that this is pampering are mistaken. The first color televisions were very imperfect and in all respects lost to their black and white counterparts. But it didn't take long for everything to change. Now, when technologies are improving much faster, we will not have time to look back, as a color screen will become an indispensable attribute of a mobile phone. T100 is, perhaps, the first serial phone model, in which the color screen, and the clamshell design itself, are implemented really successfully. For example, the display is always at an angle, because in this case the information is read better. But enough about the screen, otherwise there are too many delights. The numeric keypad is made of rubber; Large, well-spaced keys are easy to press. Under the screen there is a 4-way navigation key that allows you to get to some menu items (Melodies or Messages) from the standby mode. The navigation key is surrounded by soft keys, dialing and end call buttons, as well as the C key. All of them are made of plastic and are sunk deeper into the case, which is not always convenient. Rubber inserts are visible under the keyboard, protecting the screen from touching the keys and vice versa. Our regular readers already know that now we will talk about the battery. We have repeatedly written that the main problem of Samsung phones is the short battery life, and then there is the color screen - it seemed that everything would be very bad. My suspicions were heightened when I found not one, but two batteries in the box - a thin one and a reinforced one. Looking ahead, I will say that all worries turned out to be groundless. With a reinforced lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 900 mAh, the phone, according to the manufacturer, is able to work up to 110 hours of standby time and up to 4 hours of talk time. In reality, the device functions for about 3 days with 40 minutes of calls and active use of alarm clocks, organizer, games (45 minutes). This is not ideal, but at the same time not a bad indicator, especially if you remember about the color display and the polyphonic ringer, which take up a lot of energy. The time to fully charge the battery is about 2 hours. The second battery can be considered as a spare. It is a 720 mAh lithium-ion battery with a full charge time of 1 hour. 20 minutes. This battery provides only one day of work with 30-35 minutes of talk time, in the evening it will have to be recharged. With fewer calls, it can last about 2 days. Traditionally, Russian-language input is not available for Samsung phones, which is a pity, the function is simply necessary. Menu At the very beginning, it was said that the developers of the T100 paid a lot of attention to the interface of the device, and this is true: the organization of the menu has undergone significant changes. When you open the main menu, the name of the item is displayed at the top of the screen, next to it is a beautiful picture, usually animated. Below you see the first few paragraphs; when you activate some of them, a window appears, notifying you which of the settings is selected. Quick navigation through the menu using digital sequences is provided. I had a device with English firmware on the test, but there is already a localized version (the quality of Russification, by the way, is quite acceptable). Phone book. On the one hand, the notebook is extremely simple - one name per number, but on the other hand, it is very nicely designed. The memory of the phone is designed for 500 names, in addition, the memory of the SIM card is available. For any name, you can select a personal alert tone and assign a voice tag (18 in total). Before writing a label, the phone asks you to say it three times in a row. Identical labels cannot be saved - the device will not allow. call records. Traditional call lists, however, in this model they consist not of 10, but of 15 entries each. In this menu, you can view the duration of outgoing and incoming calls. When you press the send call key, you will see a combined list of calls indicating their types (received, sent). Unfortunately, if the number is entered in the phone book, it will not be possible to view it immediately - you will have to call the number saving function. Messages. This item opens access to work with short messages. Memory for SMS is provided only on the SIM card. When the allotted volume is filled, the icon with the image of an envelope starts flashing on the screen - in order to receive a new message, you will have to delete one of the old ones. SGH-T100 supports Nokia Smart Messaging (it's not EMS), which allows you to send pictures and ringtones to new Samsung phones and almost any Nokia. It is for this purpose that the phone has 10 pictures, of course, black and white, but quite original. It is possible to create up to 5 SMS templates (they are empty by default). Here you can also configure the reception of broadcast messages. Voice Functions. Voice features. In this menu, you can view voice tags for dialing and access tags for menu items (of which there may be 19 in your phone), edit or delete them. Menu items for which voice access is provided are highlighted in a separate list. Finally, the phone has a voice recorder that can save three recordings of 35 seconds each, but only from standby mode - recording is not possible during a call. Tones Melodies. Here are collected all the settings, one way or another related to melodies. For example, you can choose one of 37 (!!!) polyphonic melodies or one of 4 tones plus birdsong as a ringtone. It is possible to download up to 3 melodies from the Internet, as well as write two motives in the built-in editor yourself. In the same menu, the type of warning is set (vibration, melody, vibra + melody). In mixed mode, first the vibrating alert is activated three times and only then the beep sounds. For SMS messages, you can select one of 5 tones other than ring tones. There is a traditional minute timer that works during a call. You can set your phone to beep when connected. Settings. Settings. We will not enumerate all the settings available in the device, we will note only the most interesting ones. First, you can specify that when the phone is opened, voice dialing or menu access via voice is activated. Secondly, there are 5 gorgeous animated screensavers. And, what is even more interesting, a calendar with all the notes that you have made can act as a screensaver - this is extremely convenient. Finally, there is one empty slot for an image that the user can upload themselves. Organize. Calendar. This is an organizer where you can create events of various types and set alerts for them. Monthly calendar view available; days for which events are assigned are underlined. When viewing, only one event with a description is placed on the screen, there is no short list. But there is a separate item Calendar, showing the current day and month. The only, in my opinion, the meaning of this function is not to show the days for which you have events scheduled to other people. In the to-do list, you can specify a priority (low or high), sort entries, mark completed ones - everything is simple and convenient. The alarm clock, which also works when the phone is turned off, can be configured to sound once, daily and weekly. As a signal for an alarm clock, one of 4 tones (new ones again) is set. The world time function is implemented quite simply, but the calculator is made surprisingly convenient. Games. There are 3 games in the phone (AirShooting, SpaceWar, MyPet), reminiscent of the era of the appearance of the first personal computers rather than toys on a cell phone. Color, vibration, polyphonic music - in a word, this must be seen! The latest game is a real tamaggotchi that lives in your phone. WWW Services. Ordinary wap-browser version 1.2.1, offering standard features. The kit comes with a cable for connecting to a PC and software that allows you to download new melodies and wallpapers for your phone to your phone, and you can choose pictures yourself. Impressions The sound quality offered by the SGH-T100 is neither good nor bad - it is standard. The call in this model, if you remember, is polyphonic, but, nevertheless, you can almost always hear it. When it's very noisy around, the situation is saved by a vibrating alert, however, as practice shows, in such situations, the power of the vibrating alert no longer plays a role: you either feel it or not. In general, the SGH-T100 makes a positive impression, but it should be remembered that this is a fashion device with very simple functionality (a primitive notebook; no infrared port, as well as support for packet data, MMS, EMS; a voice recorder that does not work during a call ). But the phone has a luxurious screen, and today the T100 has no competitors in this parameter. The undoubted advantage of this device is also a rich delivery package, which includes a headset with a holder, a second battery, a data cable and a software disk. The polyphonic ringer is one of the best (however, only phones from Samsung and LG can boast of having this function among clamshells). Summing up, I want to say that this model is an excellent representative of the family of fashion devices. However, for those who require support from a mobile phone to support an advanced set of functions, the SGH-T100 will not suit, since, in fact, this is the most ordinary device, designed as a spectacular, although not at all useless toy that does its job perfectly.
