SAMSUNG SGH-A300. Mobile phone review Review The A300 looks quite unusual due to the small round display located on the outside. The phone belongs to the so-called clamshells, i.e. opens like a book. Technically the case is made very well. The phone practically opens itself and closes just as easily. To prevent abrasion and damage when closing the device, there are two rubber protrusions on the inner surface that prevent the plastic parts from touching. Another interesting feature is the small metal plate installed around the external display. It serves to protect the internal display. This was most likely done due to the fact that a large percentage of the repairs on the SGH-A100/A110 models involved the display being pressed through the plastic, and no special effort had to be made. Now such a situation is impossible. Compared to the A100/A110, the top of the phone (when open) has become much thinner. Therefore, it is practically not felt when the phone is open - the main weight falls on the lower part. When you take a closed phone in your hands, due to the shifted center of gravity, a feeling of imbalance arises. Replacing a standard battery with a thin one practically does not improve the situation - the imbalance is still felt. True, after a while you get used to it. The headset connector and the interface connector for charging are covered with rubber plugs. On the outside of the phone at the top there is a light service indicator. You can disable it from the menu. The dimensions of the phone are small (81x42x22 mm), it fits easily in a jeans pocket without weighing it down too much, since it weighs only 83 grams (although this is with a thin battery). The keyboard is covered with silver paint, the keys are rubber, although they seem to be made of plastic. They are very pleasant to press; the size and location of the keys are optimal for me. Accumulators It has become a good tradition for fashion phones from Samsung to include two batteries, a thin one and a standard one. Both batteries are lithium-ion, with the capacity of the first being only 570 mAh, the second - 850 mAh. From a discharged state, the recharging process takes 1 hour and from 2.30 to 3 hours, respectively, for each battery. According to the manufacturer, the standard battery can last up to 80 hours in standby mode, and up to 4 hours in talk mode. In real life, it was found that the phone, with several calls a day and a total call time of up to 25 minutes, was able to work for three days without turning off at night. With a thin battery, the device only worked for a day, i.e. from morning to evening. These results are quite consistent with the battery life of the A100, which in itself is not bad, since the emergence of new functions and features has not reduced the phone's operating time. The battery is attached quite interestingly: it seems to slide into a groove on the case and then snaps into place with a latch - a reliable design that does not allow the battery to dangle, there is no play at all. By the way, there are contacts on the outside of the battery, apparently, this way it will be possible to charge it in a charging cup. When charging in the off state, a detailed charge indicator is displayed on the screen. There is a SIM holder under the battery. The design is simple, everything can be seen in the photo. Displays As already mentioned, the A300 has two displays. The small external screen has a resolution of 64x46 pixels and a blue backlight. You can make sure that the display is graphic when you turn on the phone: an animated screensaver plays on the screen. This display is used to show indicators of signal strength, battery charge, date and time, and whether the vibration alert is turned on. When an SMS message arrives, the corresponding icon lights up. When you make a call, information about the caller is displayed on the screen (if there is a corresponding entry in the phone book): number or name. Direct Beeline numbers are defined as 8-901. The second, internal display, which has a resolution of 128x128 pixels, can accommodate up to 5 lines of text and two service lines - captions for the soft keys at the bottom and a line of icons. The internal screen is made using polymer technology and has a soft emerald backlight. All characters on the display are clearly legible, and due to the fact that fonts can dynamically change their size depending on the amount of information on the screen, there are no problems when reading. True, some menu items have a fixed font size, and if it does not fit entirely on the screen, then you will see a crawling line on the display. There is no doubt about it - it’s convenient, but the letters are a little smeared while moving. Everything is visible, of course, but the effect is not very pleasant. The second drawback is that the displays turn on at the same time and only work together, and this, in my opinion, leads to increased energy consumption. Menu In the main menu, each item has its own drawn icon, and they are all very cute. Both the menu itself and the pictures used in it seemed very thoughtful to me. What is it worth at least to adjust the contrast, carried out by adjusting the corresponding parameter of the TV shown on the display. The menu has been redesigned and has become much more convenient. This device is classified as a new generation primarily because it has a completely different user interface. So, for example, when viewing any of the menu items, after a second you will see a pop-up flag that shows the status of this item, for example, whether it is activated or not. Let me give you a more specific example: for the main menu item Sound Options, there are several sub-items, one of them is Warning Type. To view the current settings, it is not necessary to go to this sub-item: everything will be shown in a pop-up window. The same goes for Keyboard Tone and, in general, for any of the sub-items. An extremely convenient feature that saves time and enlivens the interface. The menu provides quick navigation using digital shortcuts that each item and subitem has. It will be quite easy to remember the most frequently used items. Functions Despite the fact that the phone is quite well Russified, it does not support the Russian language in the phone book, or in SMS messages. Let's hope that this flaw will be corrected in new versions of the software. The phone book is designed for only 100 numbers (in addition to the numbers that can be stored on the SIM card). There is a search function, as well as the ability to create up to 5 groups of subscribers, for each of which you can configure your own picture (out of 8), ring tone, SMS message tone (out of 10 available) or disable it. There are no voice commands, no voice typing, and, of course, no voice recorder. Everything is very simple. The device provides rich possibilities for personalization, in particular the choice of melody (there are 48 of them), you can create two of your own. To be fair, the preset tones and ringtones sound almost identical. Among other interesting functions, it is worth noting the presence of an infrared port, which is used for communication with a PC. In this case, you can use the A300 as a modem. Also, together with the EasyGSM program from Samsung, you can synchronize the organizer with a PC via infrared. All sorts of amenities The phone has a very nice alarm clock. It can be set to a specific time, a specific day and time, and even a weekly schedule. In the latter case, you select the desired days of the week from the list and set the call time. Everything is very simple. A list of tasks linked to a specific day in the calendar. Calendar. Calculator. Working with SMS messages is quite simple and you can create up to 5 SMS message templates. Display contrast setting. Lists of the last 10 missed, 10 received, 10 made calls with time indication. Auto redial: the phone tries to reach the subscriber up to 10 times after a short interval. Software modem that allows you to receive and transmit data at speeds up to 14400 bps. Per-minute warning during a call. Memorizing the number from the display in the notebook. WAP browser version 1.1 supports Cyrillic, works without any problems, and is easy to configure. Impressions I will say right away that I like the A100 and A110 models, I think they are very good phones. Subjectively, the sound quality of the A300 is comparable to the similar characteristics of these models, but when the display backlight is on, interference appears, which causes rustling in the speakers. After turning off the backlight (which usually takes a few seconds), everything returns to normal. The connection quality of the device is average: in this parameter it is inferior to such phones as Motorola v50, Panasonic GD93. There were often situations when I heard my interlocutor perfectly well, but he did not hear me at all and vice versa. The second main drawback is the weak vibration alert and quiet ringtone. Because of it, I missed several calls and eventually moved the phone from my jacket pocket to my jeans - then at least I began to feel the vibration.
