NOKIA 8250. Mobile phone review
Review
The phone box inspires confidence. It seems that the Finns, having read the domestic riddle “a hundred clothes and all without fasteners,” have created their own “mobile” answer. Yes, curiosity really filled me when, after removing the third cover of the box, I finally saw the device itself. I would like to note that there is another, fourth, cover that covers the instructions, charging and an adapter for a “Russian outlet” (in addition to these, the delivery set includes a battery and a back cover covering it). Nokia 8250 is made in Finland, but is intended primarily for Asian countries. Frankly speaking, “made” means assembled, since the logo of another well-known company in our country, Samsung, proudly appears on the chip. The orientation towards Asia is immediately noticeable: in the selection of languages for the instructions and menu of the device, as well as in the characteristic connector of the charger plug. I mentioned this not to somehow insult the phone in your eyes, but on the contrary, to emphasize the excellent quality and ingenious design, without which not a single product can be sold on the oversaturated market of the Middle and Far East today. The phone is assembled in the best traditions of Nokia. Not a single hint of even the possibility of the existence of some kind of marriage. Appearance and functionality The device is a direct descendant of the Nokia 8210 and differs from it mainly only in appearance: the body has been changed, and the blue backlight of the screen is used, familiar to many from the 8850 and 8890 models. The phone has grown a little: its dimensions are now 102,5 * 45 * 19 millimeters. Subjectively, the difference in parameters is practically not felt. A cell phone easily fits into almost any pocket, and 81 grams does not weigh on it at all. The phone fits very comfortably in your hand; your hand does not get tired during long conversations. At first, it is unusual to speak through a baby whose microphone is located somewhere in the area of the large molars. But you quickly get used to this feature, and then you stop noticing it altogether. Whether the device is beautiful or not is up to you to decide; I personally really liked it. The gray case can theoretically be replaced (the mount is the same as on the 8210 phones), however, there are no replacement panels on our market yet. The antenna, like its predecessor, is hidden inside the case. The solution is standard for the latest Nokia devices. On the front panel of the phone there is a screen, a dark insert with the manufacturer’s logo and keyboard buttons. The screen is large, holds up to 5 lines of text, and allows you to place graphics. Graphic icons are used almost everywhere - from the standard greeting (which, however, can be changed at your discretion) to indicating the root menu directories and main functions. The image contrast is very high. It's a pity, but this model does not provide a color image. How nice it would be to receive an SMS with a color picture inside! It seems that the Finns have solved the problem of thick fingers and small buttons in this model, at least this applies to the main navigation key. It is shaped like a butterfly. This is not only an effective design solution, but also a very thoughtful move from an ergonomic point of view. Pressing parts of this button is easy and convenient; there are almost never any “mistakes”. I specifically asked one of my well-fed friend to use the device - he was delighted. Moving up and down through the menu is also convenient. The rest of the keyboard is nothing special. The buttons are easy to press, so you have to use the keypad lock all the time. I really liked the bluish lighting. Its brightness is enough to work in almost any lighting level. On the top surface of the tube there is an on/off button. Despite its small size, it is easy to press, since its front edge is not recessed into the body, but is like a continuation of its “step”. On the side of the phone there are keys for adjusting the speaker volume and an infrared port. The speaker volume can be adjusted during a call. The finger finds the right key itself, so you don’t even have to get used to its location. The adjustment is accompanied by a sound signal only in call waiting mode, but if the handset is in talk mode, a sound signal is given only when the maximum volume level is reached. The connector for connecting the charger is located at the bottom. At the back you can see a cover covering the battery and SIM card. It is absolutely flat, which is very convenient - you can put the phone on any surface without fear that it will suddenly roll off. The battery used is lithium. In standby mode, if you don’t talk at all and don’t press any buttons, the charge lasts for 100 hours. If the phone is used for its intended purpose (about 15 minutes of calls daily), the battery has to be charged after three days (about 70 hours). With continuous calls, the battery is discharged after 2,5 hours. It takes 2,5 hours to fully charge; it does not have a “memory effect”, so it is not necessary to use a charger-discharge device. The SIM card is held in place by a metal plate. The mount is reliable and ensures complete immobility of the card. The only thing I didn’t like was “scratching” the card out of the mount. Yes, the battery is quite thick, so it’s better to immediately abandon the idea of changing the card while the battery is inserted. Menus and settings Immediately after turning on the device, a corporate greeting appears on the screen. It is easy to replace or remove altogether. As a new greeting, you can use graphic images (standard or downloaded from the Internet) or just text. Depending on the current security settings, the device may require a PIN code, after entering which registration on the network begins. It goes by quite quickly. When the phone is ready for use, the display shows the name of the cellular operator (in the center), the signal strength indicator scale (on the left) and the battery charge level (on the right). The "Menu" and "Names" items are located on the very bottom line. Phone numbers and their corresponding names can be stored in the phone memory (internal phone book) or in the SIM card memory. The internal phone book can simultaneously store up to 250 names (up to 20 characters) and phone numbers (up to 30 digits). If (when filling the next memory cell) the name already exists in the phone book, but the corresponding telephone numbers are different, a serial number is added to the end of the name. The first nine names and numbers in the phone book are automatically assigned as speed dial numbers. Through the “select” item, you can set a phone number stored in another cell as a speed dial number. Names and numbers stored in the phone book can be included in groups, such as family and work. Each caller group can be assigned a special ringing tone, as well as a specific graphic icon that will flash on the display when a call comes in from a caller in that group. You can also set a cell phone operating mode in which a ringing signal is given only when calling subscribers whose telephone numbers belong to a special group. In general, the phone book itself can be displayed in three main options:
I personally liked the second option the most. It is possible to use the infrared port to copy names and phone numbers from another similar device or edit the phone book from the laptop keyboard. Voice dialing on this device works just fine. There can be a total of 8 voice tags of 1,5 seconds each. The handset recognizes the owner's voice well even in very noisy places, for example in the subway. The phone has a wide range of functions that will satisfy even the most demanding user. They are grouped into menus and submenus. To get there, click the left "butterfly wing" (left arrow). To make operation easier, most menu functions are accompanied by short text and hints. To see a hint, display the required menu function and wait 15 seconds (unfortunately, due to the lack of a localization tool, this function is only relevant for people who are fluent in a foreign language). Each menu item and sub-item in this device is numbered; you can use the corresponding number keys to call them. For example, to enable the answer with any key function, you should press “menu”, then dial 4411. Naturally, sequential access to the menu is also provided. “Scrolling” through the main points using the up/down arrows is easy and very convenient. So, let's go through the main points. Messages The device signals the arrival of the next message with a short tone (or vibration - this parameter can also be configured from the menu). If the device's memory is full, the "envelope" icon on the screen begins to blink, insistently demanding to free up space. You can write SMS text in two ways: conventionally, by entering words letter by letter, or accelerated, using the T9 predictive text input system. To be honest, I didn’t like T9. Since the device is not Russified, attempts to type Russian words in Latin letters directly lead to protest from the phone. Even introducing new “English” words like “priezshai” or “celyjy” into the dictionary cannot correct the situation. The need to expand the “vocabulary” of the mobile Ellochka Ogre appears when writing almost any new message. Yes, by the way, it will also not be possible to receive a message in Russian letters: this function, unfortunately, is not supported. The phone has one interesting mode - “chat”. It allows you to receive and send messages without saving them. People who use SMS to the fullest will certainly like it. The device allows you to receive and transmit graphic messages. Standardly there are 10 pictures. It is possible to exchange graphic images via an infrared port and transmit them in the form of short text messages. The phone can be used as a fax or modem. The maximum data transfer rate is 9600. Working with voicemail does not cause any problems. You only have to set your mailbox number once. In the future, this number will be dialed automatically when you press and hold the “1” key in standby mode. Calls The second menu item is “calls”. It consists of several sub-items, which are very convenient to use. In the list of "unanswered incoming calls" you can find out the time and date of receipt of the last 10 calls that remained unanswered. If caller ID is connected, the device will also record the phone numbers of callers. In the "received calls" section, the phone records the same information, but related to calls that you answered. The last 10 dialed numbers are recorded in the “dialed numbers” item. The duration of the last conversation (and the sum of all conversations) can be found in the “duration” item. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to display the call duration on the screen without going into the menu: this function is missing. But you can still control the duration of conversations. To do this, you need to set up a call price limit (quick access in menu 2-7-1). Modes The “modes” item allows the user to configure the sound signals generated by the device, depending on the specific situation. It is very convenient to configure profiles (roughly speaking, volume levels) of a call. You can do this in the usual way (from the menu) or quickly by briefly pressing the power key-switching off and selecting the required level. An interesting feature: if the phone is used with a headset, then two new items are automatically added to the profiles - “headphones” and “car” (when connecting a headset and a car kit, respectively). There are 35 ringtones to choose from. In addition, there are also free cells for options downloaded from the Internet or sent from other phones. However, you cannot write a melody yourself from the handset keyboard. I would like to note the excellent vibration alert. You can feel it even when the device is in the outer pocket of a fairly thick jacket. In silent mode (when only the vibration alert is turned on), during the entire period of use I did not miss a single call. For people who do not speak a foreign language very well, the “renaming profiles” function will be relevant (considering that the cell phone is not Russified). With its help, incomprehensible words, the meaning of which is difficult to find out from the dictionary, can be changed to Russian ones, although written in transliteration (only the profiles “normal”, “headphones” and “car” cannot be renamed). options The fourth menu item is “options”. You can set an alarm clock, a clock (and there is a function for automatically correcting the date and time, which, however, must be supported by the operator), and call modes. In the same paragraph, the device menu options are configured. The “protection installation options” section is highlighted separately. If necessary, you can configure such parameters as a PIN code request, call barring mode (a very useful function if you often give your phone to someone), and it is possible to create a closed subscriber group. In addition to asking for a PIN code, the phone may also ask for a code when changing the SIM card or when trying to enter the phone book. These parameters are configured from the "protection level" item. Forwarding Call forwarding (5th menu item, the function must be supported by the network) allows you to transfer incoming calls to an answering machine or to any other phone number. Other points Separate items include “games” (4 in total), “calculator” (a currency converter is included in the same section) and “calendar”, which should be mentioned separately. This option allows you to enter text marks into the device’s memory (similar to entries in an organizer) that “pop up” at a given moment (there are 50 cells in total). In principle, the idea is great. The developers did not take into account only one little thing: entering these same text labels is quite tedious and time-consuming, and since the device is not Russified, you read them without much pleasure. The situation is much simpler if you use a laptop keyboard instead of the keyboard of the phone itself. Through the IR item, you can configure your phone to transmit data via the infrared port. The device to be contacted must be compatible with the IrDA standard. There is only one problem when working with the port. The IR ports of both devices must be stationary relative to each other, located at a fairly close distance, and there should be no obstacles or interference between them. Of course, such conditions are difficult to create in a moving car. The last section of the menu is “a set of services”. It can be used to configure the handset to work with TTML applications. It’s a pity, but these applications cannot be called a full-fledged Internet. Quality of reception and communication Registration on the phone network is quick. In the city, as a rule, there are no problems with the signal. The fact that the antenna is built-in, in my opinion, did not in any way affect the sensitivity of the device in the area of uncertain reception. I compared the signal level (as indicated on the screen) with the Nokia 7110 phone. The reception is approximately the same, and both handsets lost the network (when moving away from the base transmitter) at a distance of 30 meters from each other. The speaker volume is quite enough. You can hear your interlocutor perfectly even in the subway. Soft noise, which is sort of in the background, allows you to avoid the unpleasant feeling of “deathly silence” during pauses in conversation. The built-in microphone also did not cause any complaints. The device practically does not distort either your voice or the voice of the interlocutor. Overall Impression I liked the pipe. First of all, naturally, with its original design and excellent functionality. The main advantages of the device include excellent communication quality, beautiful blue backlighting, the ability to insert pictures into text messages, the presence of “Chat”, and excellent build quality. Very powerful vibration alert. Of the minuses, I can note the lack of speakerphone. Ring tones cannot be programmed directly from the phone keypad.
