NOKIA 8210

Having received a small and light box with a phone, a charger and instructions, I was once again convinced that Nokia makes beautiful things. The box has a nice photo on the front side, the Nokia logo and that's it. I began to look for where the name of the phone model is written and found it on the side of the box. At the same time, the description is in 6 languages, unfortunately, Russian is not among them.

The suspicion immediately arose that the instruction was at best in English and some other European language. My expectations were deceived, inside I found Russian and English instructions. They are beautifully made little books. On the second page, before the table of contents, it is concise, containing information on how to make calls, block the keypad from accidental pressing, use the phone book and the menu. The section is called - Quick and Easy. Next comes a detailed table of contents, which makes it easy to navigate the capabilities of the phone. For all the time that I used this phone, I had several questions about using certain functions. I quickly found the answers in the instructions.

I was very interested in whether the instructions included in the kit differ from those posted on the Nokia website. After downloading a 750 KB pdf file and opening it in Acrobat Reader, I was unpleasantly surprised. The instruction corresponded to the comma to the instruction that lay in front of me on the table, but ... All the phone key patterns were indigestible in all document viewing modes. Often, it was only necessary to guess which button is shown in the figure, and check the correctness of the guess experimentally. The only assumption I can make is that in this way Nokia is fighting against gray deliveries of phones to Russia, since such devices, as a rule, do not have Russian instructions. On the other hand, perhaps I did not understand something, and the key patterns are easy to read on another computer. But it was a lyrical digression ...

In the box, in addition to the instructions, a charger, a battery and a case back cover were found. Turning on the phone...

On this model, the SIM card holder is metal, while the card can be installed even with a battery. When the battery is installed, it supports the edge of the SIM card, which prevents any movement of the card. Very reliable construction. So, by inserting the card and battery (Li-Ion) and closing the case with the back cover, you can turn on the phone. The phone's on/off button is placed separately on the top panel of the device. At the same time, the button is slightly recessed and some effort is required to press it and turn on the phone. This device is insured against accidental activation.

When turned on, a welcome line appears on the display, which you can customize. So, for example, on this device, I installed the Hi Ginger line. The greeting can be absolutely anything, for example, Hello Host. As you can see, the Russian language is also supported here.

The phone is registered very quickly in the network. (GSM900/1800) Observation is very subjective, but for the entire time of using the phone, registration in the network proceeded very quickly. After registration, an inscription with the name of the mobile operator appears on the display, in my case it was Beeline. In addition, the display shows the time, signal strength (4 levels), battery level (4 levels), as well as the Menu and Name lines.

Despite its relatively small size, the high-contrast display can display up to 5 lines of text. The display can also display graphics. The screen backlight of this model, unfortunately, is the usual green color, not blue. Information on the display is clearly visible both indoors and outdoors on a sunny day.

It should be noted that this model has a branded menu from Nokia. It is thought out to the smallest detail and makes it easy to navigate the points. Each menu item and sub-item has its own number, so this hierarchical menu is easy to navigate and each item is unique. For example, the clock setting item is a digital number 4-2-3, or sequentially, Menu - Options - Clock. Knowing the numerical sequence of the desired menu, you can easily access it by typing numbers on the keyboard. (Setting should be done by pressing Menu first).

Working with the menu on Nokia phones is not difficult, and you quickly get used to the logic of placing items. After Nokia, the menus on devices from other manufacturers seem confusing and complicated.

I don’t know about other people, but I immediately climb on the new phone to listen to the call options. This phone is no exception. There are several configurations available under the Modes menu item, namely Normal, Silent, Meeting, Outdoor, Pager. These are the so-called profiles, i.e. phone settings for different environments. Each profile can be customized by you to your own taste. You can choose the volume of the call, the melody, whether the vibrating alert will be turned on simultaneously with the sound signal. For example, when you enter a clinic or other public place, you either turn off the phone or turn on the vibrator, or maybe just mute the ringer volume. Nokia 8210 allows you to turn on any profile in almost two touches, you just need to press the phone on / off button (do not hold it for a long time if you do not want to turn off the phone) and you will see a list of profiles from which you can select the one you need.

But back to the melodies. You can choose one of the 35 pre-installed tunes, I personally really liked The Buffoon tune. It is also possible to receive a melody via SMS from another phone or an Internet server providing such a service.

Having set up profiles and messed around with the enumeration of melodies, I started calling my acquaintances and friends to check the quality of the phone. We call everyone, everyone, everyone...

Dialing on this unit is absolutely the same as on other cell phones. No features were observed. The keys, despite their small size, are very comfortable to press, and the fact that they are practically recessed into the body makes accidental pressing unlikely. The keypad lock is turned on with two touches, during a call it is automatically turned off. Removing the lock also occurs in two touches. For night calls, the keyboard backlight is quite sufficient.

During a call, you can adjust the speaker volume using the buttons on the side. During the conversation, a slight noise was noticed in the speaker, which did not interfere with speaking, but was present. Reducing the sound level in the speaker did not work. This noise is permanent, which can be attributed to a particular device, since other samples did not make noise during a call.

The sensitivity of the device is very good, he saw the network everywhere and even in the basement, where his cheaper counterparts passed, he allowed to carry on a conversation without deteriorating the quality of communication. Speech on the phone sounds very soft and pleasant. There were no complaints about the quality of communication during the week of work with Nokia 8210. True, it should be noted that testing took place only in Moscow, where the signal level is quite high. But at the same time, the author was talking from a moving subway car (Filyovskaya line, ground, but with small tunnels) and from a moving car, as well as from the basements of old masonry houses with huge walls.

It should also be noted that the claimed Li-Ion battery life in standby mode is up to 150 hours, and in talk mode up to 210 minutes. With a large number of calls (up to 30 minutes) per day, the phone lasted almost three days without turning it off. Also, at this time, I bullied him in every possible way, tried various call options, changed settings, etc. Charging the battery took about an hour and a half with the phone turned on. Phone book

Nokia 8210 has a large phone book that allows you to store up to 250 phone numbers. It is also possible to store numbers in the SIM card memory, as well as operations for copying numbers between the phone and card memory and vice versa. The phone book is accessed through the Names item. Here you can set up the view of numbers in the phone book, so you can see only the names of subscribers, the name and number, and the list of names. I opted for the option when the phone shows the name and number of the subscriber. There is also the ability to view the number of empty memory cells.

Up to 10 numbers can be assigned for speed dialing and 8 numbers can be dialed using voice command. This function works well even in very noisy and crowded places, which I did not expect at all. SMS messages

Nokia 8210 allows you to receive and send SMS messages. At the same time, it is possible to receive SMS messages in Russian. Working with SMS is quite standard, but I would like to note the inconvenience of typing messages from the keyboard. This is due to the fact that the keys have only inscriptions for the English alphabet, and when choosing the Russian language (it is the default), three Russian letters are typed first, then a number, and only then English letters. When typing a message in English, T9's built-in dictionary-based predictive entry of word endings is more of a hindrance than a help. Very quickly, this feature becomes annoying, and you turn it off.

8210 is able to transmit picture messages (the function must be supported by the mobile operator). There are 10 pre-installed picture messages, they are very cute and I have included them below. Received picture messages can be saved and later used to send your own messages.

Unfortunately, Nokia 8210 does not have a cable that can be connected to a PC, communication with a PC is only via infrared. But at the same time, you get the opportunity to use the phone as a modem, as well as edit SMS messages and the phone book on a PC. Editing the phone book is certainly a handy feature, but using a PC to send messages seemed quite difficult to me, given the availability of a large number of free services of this kind on the Internet.

Using a phone as a modem with a laptop is justified only in places where landline telephone communication is completely absent, which is due to the high cost of airtime today.

Also, using the IR port, you can connect the phone to all kinds of PDAs, both based on Palm OS and Windows CE. Using the 8210 as a modem for the Palm Pilot is more justified due to the small amount of transmitted information. All sorts of amenities

The phone has an alarm that will wake you up even when the phone is off. At the same time, until you turn it off, it will continue to wake you up at certain intervals. Unfortunately, you cannot set a melody for the alarm, there is only one signal. When the alarm clock is running, the inscription "Rise" appears on the screen and bells run along it.

The built-in calendar (up to 50 notes) can remind you of an event at a specified time. The disadvantage is the difficulty of entering large texts. Therefore, notes in the calendar are too concise.

The phone has a standard set of games:

  • snake (not interesting to play, very slow and dreary)
  • memory
  • logic
  • rotation

A calculator and currency converter can help in the absence of a full-fledged calculator. My personal opinion is that the calculator and currency converter are inconvenient to use and lose a lot to any calculator. Accessories

Nokia releases Xpress-On replacement faceplates for this model. But I was more interested in accessories for wearing the phone on a belt, since the phone comes without a clip in the standard delivery. Some codes for the phone

These codes do not represent practical value for the average user, but they allow, if desired, to find out additional information about the device.

IMEI number - *#06#

Firmware version - *#0000#

  • 1 line - firmware version
  • 2 line - firmware release date
  • 3 line - phone type

Serial number - *#92702689#

  • Screen 1 - Phone production date
  • Screen 2 - Serial number, IMEI
  • Screen 3 - Date of purchase
  • Screen 4 - Date of last repair

Conclusion

To be honest, I now have mixed feelings. On the one hand, I really liked the Nokia 8210, despite my initial prejudice against this device. Yes, the device can be considered female, but it seems to me that a man will be happy to use it. This small, beautiful toy has all the features you need in a modern phone. The sound quality is good, but a slight hiss of the speaker during a call is still present. According to my wife, she did not notice this hiss during a conversation in a crowded place, but in a quiet environment, she confirmed its presence. A large number of functions, sometimes even unnecessary, in particular, the calculation of the cost of calls, which is not supported by mobile operators. Exchange of picture messages, exchange of contacts with other users of Nokia phones and some other models via infrared.

And now a small fly in the ointment. This phone does not have a time counter for the current conversation, and in order to see how much you have spoken, you need to go into the menu, which is not at all convenient. The device does not have timers that can give a signal after a certain time has elapsed during a call. It is clear that in such an expensive model, these functions were considered superfluous by the developers. But I would be pleased to have at least one timer in this phone.

The presence of a calendar is convenient for the relationship between the day of the week and the date, but making notes for a certain date and generally entering any text in the Nokia 8210 is quite painful. Therefore, if you actively write SMS messages, then this phone is not for you. The presence of a T9 dictionary does not save the situation, but only worsens it.

I repeat, but of all the accessories for everyday use of the phone, none of them, except for the case, suited me. And the case, in turn, is not very convenient for women, although it is ideal for men. Looks great.

Hence the problem of where to wear the Nokia 8210 for a woman. It can be on a belt with a branded clip, as one of my friends does. And you can also in a bag, but then on a noisy street you may well not hear your phone ring. The only way out is to leave the vibrating alert turned on in addition to the melody.

I would really like to have a display with a stylish blue backlight on this phone.

If you are not confused by the shortcomings described above, then this is an ideal phone for active use. It has no obvious shortcomings, in addition to the shortcomings listed.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Dangerous hydroelectric power station 16.08.2012

Hydroelectric power is generally considered to be "environmentally friendly". In fact, nothing is burned here, the air is not polluted and no waste remains.

However, the case of the Chinese Three Gorges hydroelectric power station on the Yangtze River, the most powerful in the world, casts doubt on the harmlessness of hydroelectric power stations. Although the hydroelectric power plant should finally be put into operation only at the end of 2012, when the last three turbines will start working, the unpleasant consequences are already clear. A reservoir of 1080 square kilometers formed in front of the dam sank 13 cities and 466 villages, and 1,3 million people had to be relocated. After the construction of the dam, the water of the Yangtze became undrinkable, as toxic microalgae multiplied in the stagnant water of not only the river, but also its 22 tributaries.

The existence of the rarest species of animals - the river dolphin and several species of fish - is under threat. At the bottom of the reservoir, silt and sand brought by water are accumulating faster than expected. Over the next ten years, at least $27 billion will have to be spent on mitigating these consequences. This is four billion more than the cost of the construction itself.
