Artificial rainbow for solar panels

New research from King's College London could lead to a new generation of solar cells and light-emitting diode (LED) displays. Biophysicists and nanotechnologists led by Professor Anatoliy Zaits showed in detail how an artificial "rainbow" is created from individual colors using nanoscale structures on the surface of a metal.

More than 150 years ago, color separation was carried out, and it became possible to project different colors separately. This ultimately paved the way for the creation of modern technology - color televisions and computer displays. And now the main task of scientists in this discipline is the manipulation of color at the nanoscale. It can be clearly said that these works will be important for the improvement of imaging and spectroscopy techniques, the implementation of sounding of chemical and biological agents, as well as the improvement of the quality of solar cells, flat screen televisions and displays.

Researchers from King's College London have managed to capture a beam of light and decompose it into component colors in different zones of a nanostructured surface. Depending on the geometry of the nanostructure, a rainbow can be projected onto a gold film 100 times thinner than a human hair.

"Nanostructures of various types will allow solar cell cells to increase the efficiency of light absorption," Professor Zayats explained the practical essence of his discovery. "This means that now, for example, it is possible to illuminate solar cells not at a fixed angle and without sacrificing efficiency in different wavelength ranges of light waves. "When you use this effect in the opposite direction - that is, for TVs and displays - it will be possible to look at the screens from a wider angle."

There is a big difference between a natural rainbow and a nanostructured one. It lies in the fact that the natural red color always appears on the outside, and blue with purple on the inside. With a man-made rainbow produced on a nanostructured surface, researchers are able to control the order of colors by manipulating the parameters of the nanostructures.
