NEC DB4000

The first impression of the NEC DB4000 was very favorable. A small silver box with the image of this phone model and the NEC logo on a beautiful dark blue background, it neatly folds a nice phone, battery, charger, instructions and brochures.

I immediately fell in love with the design of the phone in front of me. This is probably not surprising, because quite compact devices with a hinged lid, rounded and streamlined shape, with a beautiful silvery front panel can appeal to many, especially women. With dimensions of 120x42x22 mm, the NEC DB4000 phone takes up very little space in your purse and fits easily into your pocket. The weight of this device is about 99 grams. So you can wear it calmly, shoulders and pockets are not delayed.

The first disappointment came when I took the instruction and saw that it was only in English, although there were Russian explanations on the brochures. Of course, you can translate, but it’s much more pleasant when everything is written in your native language and you don’t have to think too much. True, I explained this shortcoming to myself by the fact that NEC is only making its first steps on the Russian market and was not particularly upset.

Already online...

To turn on the device, as usual, you need a SIM card and a battery. In this model, the SIM card holder is metal, and the battery also serves as the back panel of the phone. Everything seemed comfortable enough, nothing more.

By pressing the on / off key of the phone, which was placed separately on the top panel, I began to wait until the phone found the network, and it would be possible to check this little miracle in practice. The registration process was quick, and a welcome message appeared on the screen. I tried to change it, the inscription is being edited, but, alas, it was impossible to write anything in Russian. But you can easily write something in any other European language, even in Greek.

Looking ahead, I must say that, in principle, this device supports the Russian language. However, Russification leaves much to be desired. The translation was made poorly and outwardly the inscriptions look somehow strange, only capital letters and abbreviations only from consonants. One can only guess what is hidden under this or that menu item. In any case, I never got used to this kind and used the default English version.

After the welcome message, the display showed the name of the mobile operator, date, day of the week, time, as well as the battery level (4 bars) and signal strength (5 bars). When using such functions of the device as voice mail, receiving SMS-messages, forwarding, additional icons lit up.

The display itself is a high-contrast graphic display that allows you to display up to 4 lines of 12 characters, not counting the line with icons. The backlight of the screen in this model is the usual green color. There are no ripples in the eyes from it, a pleasant soft light makes it easier to work in low light and does not interfere at all in sunny weather.

Menu

Opening the cover of the phone, I immediately got into the Menu to make sure that the technical capabilities of the device are not inferior to its appearance.

After a quick look through the Menu, I found that this phone, in addition to the standard functions, has a timer and an alarm clock.

The timer mode is very different. You can set the screen to display the total time of calls, the time of the last call, or the total time of outgoing calls. It's nice not to have to go to the Menu to see how much you've said. And if you have the "Cost of a call" service, you can immediately understand how much you have already spent.

The alarm clock can ring quite loudly, you can really hear it. However, once you listen to it, you immediately want to turn it off. Painfully piercing and sonorous ...

Also in this unit there is a modem that can transfer data at speeds up to 9600 bps.

If we talk about the organization of the menu, then in general it seemed to me that it was arranged quite simply and logically. Access to any item could be obtained in two ways: either by simply scrolling through the menu, or by using the existing hierarchical system, in which each item and sub-item is assigned its own number. Such a digital sequence helped to find the desired item very quickly.

The only thing that seemed not very convenient is that when you change the settings for each saved function, you immediately fall out of the "Menu" mode. To set the next function in the same paragraph, you must again open the menu and do the whole operation again.

By pressing the "up" button, you can easily change phone modes. Depending on where you are, in the car, at work or just at home, i.e. Depending on your surroundings, you can choose the most suitable profile at the moment. These are "Normal" in which all settings work as you set them, "Meeting" in which only vibrate works, "Pocket" in which the keypad lock is turned on, and "Car" when the phone rings.

The profile selection function turns on quickly and can sometimes even be very useful.

Ring tone selection

Having set up the phone in the way that was convenient for me, I moved on to choosing a ringtone. Of the 14 available, the melody "Carmen" pleased me the most.

It was also nice that for each subscriber (available in the phone book) you could set your own melody. This helped to know who was calling without even seeing the phone number. Naturally, this feature is available only if your mobile operator supports the "Caller ID" service and you ordered it. However, it was possible to set your own version of the signal not only for receiving speech, but also for receiving faxes and data. You can't just change the signal for SMS messages, which can just make a normal person stutter.

It's a shame, but it is impossible to insert your own melody via SMS from another phone or Internet server.

Of the ringing modes, which this phone model has several (melody only, vibrating alert only, or melody plus vibrating alert), I found the melody plus vibrating alert option to be the most convenient, since in this case the phone is easily identified in any even very noisy public place.

How can you hear?

And finally, the first call. I opened the flip cover, which is active in this phone, and, probably, then I was most disappointed. I can't say that the call quality was very bad, but I expected more. The interlocutor and I heard each other, but there was clearly a slight noise in the dynamics, and some kind of echo appeared from time to time. At first, I thought it was an accident, but subsequent use of the phone only worsened the first impression. Sometimes, of course, the connection was quite tolerable, but sometimes there was a feeling that they were talking to you from the other world. One could only guess what the other person was talking about, some things had to be asked several times.

I would characterize the sensitivity of the phone as below average. On the street, in the car, it seemed to work fine, although there were failures there too. Once in the city center, when I heard a call, I just wanted to open the lid, as the phone decided to reboot for no reason. But in the premises, calls often simply failed, sometimes in order to get through to me, it was necessary to dial the number 3-4 times, although people around were talking calmly.

Purely theoretically, the sound quality can be improved in this phone. The fact is that the NEC DB4000 has EFR support, i.e. improved speech codec. But in Russia, this service is not yet supported by mobile operators. Therefore, practically nothing can be done with the sound quality.

Charging the battery while talking 15-20 minutes a day was enough for three days. This model uses a Li-Ion battery (900 mAh), which allows the phone to work in standby mode up to 120 hours, and in talk mode up to 170 minutes. A full charge took 1.5-2 hours. We used a charger with automatic selection of the operating voltage from 100 to 240 Volts, which is included with the phone.

In this phone model, I also did not like the fact that the projections on the flip, with which it should be easy to open, are not very clearly made. Taking into account the fact that the NEC DB4000 has an active flip, sometimes it turned out that when the lid was opened, the fingers jumped off, and, having only managed to open a little, the lid slammed shut and the call fell off, you had to wait until they called back.

Another problem is dialing. Due to the small width of the phone (42 mm), the buttons on it are located quite close to each other, and at the same time they are slightly depressed. Therefore, when dialing a number, it always seems that in addition to the desired number, the next one will also be pressed. Although you get used to this arrangement very quickly and then you no longer notice this inconvenience.

The auto redial feature was very helpful. There was no need to waste time on endless dialing, the phone did everything by itself.

phone book

Access to the phone book can be obtained by pressing just one button, which is taken out separately and on which the book is drawn. This is very convenient, since to call a number from the memory you do not need to delve into the Menu for a long time. In addition, the convenience of using this phone book is also enhanced by the fact that this phone has a system for searching the subscriber's number by name. By entering the first letters (up to 4) you can easily navigate in the list of registered subscribers. Thus, in order to find the desired phone number, one could use the search engine by name, or simply scroll through the phone book.

The phonebook itself holds up to 100 numbers. 10 numbers can be assigned for speed dialing.

It should be noted that entering numbers into the phone book in this model is not very traditional, although quite convenient way. After reading the instructions, it was found that in order to enter a number into the phone, you need to dial it, then press the phone book call button, confirm the number entry, fill in the "Name" field and then save the number in an empty cell. Next, you will again be prompted to enter a new number and name.

The way to delete and edit entries is more familiar. To do this, enter the phone book and press the phone book key. In this case, a menu will appear, with the help of which you can edit or delete the entry.

Accessories

It seems to me that the selection of accessories for a particular phone model is a rather difficult task and requires a lot of attention. They should be not only comfortable, functional, but also stylish. After all, they are always in sight, and even a phone with a very original design can get lost in a case.

As for accessories for the NEC DB4000, it is almost impossible to find them in our country, again, most likely, due to the low popularity of NEC. It's a pity, because without a case, the phone starts to scratch, and the beautiful silver paint is not very strong. Perhaps I was "lucky" and got an unsuccessful copy, but the tiny scratch that was originally, after a week of using the phone, parted and became quite noticeable.

Test results

So, what is NEC DB4000? Stylish, lightweight phone, quite functional, does not require frequent charging, but at the same time, unfortunately, it does not perform its main function - communication. Without any problems, this device can be used on the streets, even outside the city, but for talking indoors, this is not the best option.
