A patch is a dosage form in the form of a plastic mass that has the ability to soften at body temperature and adhere to the skin, or in the form of the same mass on a flat carrier, intended for external use.
The patches have an effect on the skin, subcutaneous tissues and, in some cases, a general effect on the body. The patches can be in the form of a plastic mass with or without a backing or on an adhesive tape of a medicated pad. The composition of the patch mass, depending on the purpose of the patch, may include natural or synthetic rubbers approved for medical use, their mixtures, as well as other polymers, fat-like substances, natural oils, fillers, antioxidants and medicinal substances.

Elastic Band-Aid

What do you do if you suddenly get burned or cut? That's right - seal the wound with adhesive tape. But if Josephine Dixon were a more skilled housewife, who knows what we would bandage small cuts and scrapes with today ...

The Dixon family moved to New Brunswick, New Jersey in 1920. As befits an exemplary wife, Josephine tried every evening to meet her husband Earl, who works at Johnson & Johnson as a purchasing manager, with a hot dinner. Unfortunately, she was clearly deprived of the talent of a cook. Not in the sense that the dinner was inedible, no, from that point of view, everything was in perfect order. That's just in the process of cooking, she managed to cut herself with a knife several times and burn herself. Her loving husband bandaged her fingers every evening with gauze, securing it with pieces of duct tape. This took a lot of time, and such bandages did not last long.

Finally, after several weeks of kitchen torment, Earl had an idea (fortunately - as the official history of Johnson & Johnson says - it was not the idea to hire a cook). Earl decided to make the dressings ahead of time, using a strip of duct tape as a base and placing squares of gauze covered with a thin cloth at regular intervals.

Now Josephine could bandage her wounded fingers herself, simply cutting pieces of the required length from this tape and sticking them on the cuts. Earl told his boss about the invention. He liked the idea, and soon the first packs of the band-aid, called BAND-AID in the West (this is a trademark of Johnson & Johnson, which eventually became a household name), went on sale.

Unfortunately, we do not know if Josephine became a good cook, but the fact that she was the catalyst and actually the first user of a brilliant invention is a historical fact. And Earl Dixon was pleased. Over time, he became vice president of the company and remained in this post until his retirement.

Now it is impossible to imagine a first aid kit without a band-aid. Although in the first year the success of BAND-AID was rather modest - in 1921, plasters were sold for only $ 3000. But in 2001, a kind of anniversary was celebrated - by this time more than 100 billion adhesive plasters of this brand had been sold!

The plaster mass in appearance is a homogeneous mixture, dense at room temperature and softening, sticky at body temperature. Non-drug adhesive tape-like plasters (adhesive plasters) are used for fixing dressings and other purposes. The patches should be easy to remove from the skin.

The patches are available in packaging that protects them from external influences and ensures stability during the specified expiration date. Store them in a dry, dark place, unless otherwise indicated in the annotation.

Ordinary plasters are primarily divided into rolled and individually packaged, but there are also special types of plasters designed for specific tasks. The most common examples are the anti-smoking patch, the occlusion patch, and the patch to be worn after eye surgery.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Solid State Drives SSDNow KC380 from Kingston Technology 20.06.2013

The start of sales of SSDNow KC380 solid-state drives was announced by Kingston Technology, a company specializing in the production of data storage devices. The Kingston SSDNow KC380 solid state drive is designed in 1,8-inch form factor, so it is well suited for installation in laptops, tablets and netbooks with a reduced storage bay. The novelty weighs less than hard drives, surpassing them in reliability and speed.

The SSDNow KC380 uses the SandForce SF2241 controller. To connect to the host, use the SATA 6 Gb / s interface. According to the manufacturer, the sequential read speed reaches 550 MB / s, sequential write - 520 MB / s.

The series includes models with a capacity of 60 and 120 GB. The maximum performance in 4 KB read mode is 86000 IOPS. The maximum performance in the write mode in blocks of 4 KB depends on the volume and is 79000 IOPS for the younger model, 48000 IOPS for the older one. In the case of random access in blocks of 4 KB, the performance on read operations is 14000 and 17000 IOPS, and on write operations - 77000 and 45000 IOPS for SSDs of 60 and 120 GB, respectively.

The manufacturer estimates the drive resource at 46,5 TB and 93 TB (the total amount of information that can be recorded over the entire service life). The warranty period is three years. With dimensions of 78,5 x 54 x 5 mm, the devices weigh 27,43 g.
