On a hot day, you really want to swim or just sit in the shade by the water. But most garden plots are located far from ponds and rivers, and one can only dream of swimming. But what if you build a simple reservoir right on your site? A decorative pond with a diameter of about two meters and a depth of 80-90 cm is easy to build in one or two days. And only a polyethylene greenhouse film or roofing material (for waterproofing), clay and sand will be needed for construction.

First, dig a pit under the pond with a margin of 20-30 cm. Its walls should be inclined. Lay a 10-15 cm layer of well-kneaded clay on the bottom and gently level it, slightly wetting it with water. Let the clay dry, then lay a second layer of exactly the same thickness. Pour small gravel or pebbles on top and, without waiting for drying, tamp with the end of a wide board.

A plastic film or roofing material (roofing felt) will allow you to do without clay. Cover the bottom of the pit with a thin (6-8 cm) layer of sand and cover with a film in several layers. Sprinkle pebbles or gravel on top. The pool is ready. Of course, you can’t really swim in it, but you can plunge into the heat. And if you plant it with plants, shrubs, decorate it with large stones, then your own pond will become, perhaps, the most comfortable corner of the garden. Water is easiest to drag in buckets or pour from a hose. Try to change it at least every two weeks. Otherwise it will bloom. If the reservoir is under the sun for most of the day, the water in it warms up quickly. And so that it does not evaporate, pour granules or small pieces of polystyrene on the water mirror. Such a screen will not only protect water from evaporation, but also serve as a heat-protective "fur coat", and you will be able to adjust the temperature of the water in the pool at your own discretion. And here is another way. Cover the pool with a frame with stretched plastic wrap. You can simply pull it on the metal arcs from the greenhouse. They are installed along the edges of the pool. The film will reliably protect water from overheating or cooling and will not allow it to evaporate.

If you spare no effort, then you can build a pool that looks like a corner of a mountainous country - with alpine plants, a rocky landscape and a whole system of waterfalls. The water here is constantly circulating in a circle. A low-power electric pump (for example, "Baby") pumps water from the pool and delivers it through a pipe or rubber hose to a hill made of stones. From there, it flows by gravity along small rapids. It looks very nice.

The bottom of the future pool should be laid out with wire mesh reinforcement and poured with a layer of concrete 10-15 cm thick. It is not difficult to prepare it. To do this, you will need cement (grades "300", "400" and higher), sand and gravel. The latter can be replaced with rubble or medium-sized pebbles.

Pond and waterfall in the garden
Pool device: 1 - pump, 2 - supply hose; 3 - rapids of the waterfall; 4 - drainage pipe; 5 - bowls with water-loving plants; 6 - pump cable

It is best to use the so-called "cast" concrete in the construction of the pool. If you have cement grade "300", then to prepare a solution for one weight part of cement, take 2,5 parts of sand and 4 gravel. For one weight part of cement brand "400" 3 parts of sand and 4,5 gravel are taken. Water makes up 60-70% of the total mass of all components.

The concrete solution is mixed in a 100x100x60 cm box with a galvanized iron bottom. The mixture is prepared as follows: the required amount of sand is measured by volume, poured into a box, cement is added (in dry form) and shoveled until a mass is uniform in color. Gravel is added to it and shoveled again 3-4 times. The resulting mixture is slightly moistened from a garden watering can.

Before the concrete is dry, spread a thin layer of cement over it and rub it in with a brush until the concrete surface is even, slightly shiny and no longer rubbed. This process is called ironing and significantly increases the water resistance of concrete.

To prevent water from overflowing the pool and flooding the area in rainy weather, we recommend equipping it with a drainage pipe with a filter. It is best to bring it out into a gutter or, if this is not possible, into a special pit-well 1x1 m in size and 1,5-2 m deep. In the middle of the pit, lay a small hill of rubble or cobblestones and insert the end of the drain pipe into it. Fill the rest of the space with large gravel, slag or small rubble stone. From above, the pit is waterproofed with several layers of roofing material and covered with a layer of soil 40 cm thick.

Of course, such a pool is not a real pond, but do not flirt and watch your little brothers and sisters. Swimming is allowed only in the presence of adults!

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Electromagnetic invisibility half-cloak 05.12.2013

Chinese scientists at Nanjing Southeast University have developed a schematic diagram for an invisibility cloak that will hide only part of a hidden object, and have already made a prototype of such a cloak that hides internal direct current.

Physicists have given the name of invisibility cloaks to devices that are able to make radiation (acoustic or electromagnetic) go around a certain object and create the same field on the other side, as if this object does not exist at all. In such a device, the fundamental point is that the radiation does not get inside the object, because of which, being inside, it is impossible to see everything that happens outside.

The authors of the study developed a schematic diagram of a device that can solve this problem. It does not hide the object completely, but only most of it, as a result, it is possible to obtain information from the outside - the authors cite as an example Harry Potter's invisibility cloak, which did not hide the head of a fairy-tale character. Such a device solves not only the problem of information isolation. It is capable of creating optical illusions for an external observer, showing him something other than what he should see. Thus, it is possible, for example, to hide one car under the guise of another.

The prototype, which was created to demonstrate the principled approach, is able to hide from external observation the direct current that flows inside. Structurally, the device is a disk, which consists of many resistors connected by conductors.

Designers of invisibility cloaks often turn to microwave radiation, radio emission and direct current due to technical difficulties: the average size of parts should be smaller, the smaller the wavelength. Operation in the visible light range requires the creation of metamaterials with a characteristic nanometer size of details. To date, the most studied are invisibility cloaks designed to operate in the microwave range. Scientists have learned to make them microscopic and soft.
