Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Why do geese fly in formation?

Imagine that you hear a distant cry in the sky: "Ha-ha-ha!" You look up and see a wedge-shaped formation of geese flying south.

This goose wedge moves at a speed of 80 km/h. We can speculate why they fly like this. You probably know that planes fly in the same formation so that each of them can see the others and follow the leader. The geese also have a leader, whom they follow during their flights, a clever old gander who knows the way perfectly, both day and night. The wedge-shaped action is as convenient for them as it is for airplanes.

There are about 40 species of geese. Only 10-12 of them live in the United States, and virtually all of them are only winter visitors. The goose can be considered a Canadian bird.

The most famous type of geese is called the "Canadian goose". During migration, he flies through almost all of North America. It has a black head and neck with a broad white patch that widens near the bill and sometimes extends to both cheeks.

The Canada goose usually lives with one goose its entire life. His favorite food is grasshoppers, but he does not disdain other insects or worms. Most of the time he eats plants: wild rice, reed roots. He builds his nest on the ground, like other geese, by the way, leveling its bottom with his chest.

Canada goose is a delicacy and until recently thousands of birds were killed each year. An adult goose weighs about 5-6 kg. But now there is a law prohibiting the hunting of these birds.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Social Network Threads 10.07.2023

Facebook Meta, the parent company of Instagram, is introducing a new service called Threads, which is a direct competitor to Twitter and offers similar functionality.

The chat app, called Threads, is already available for pre-order on the Apple App Store, but it won't be available for download until Thursday.

The description of the service states that Threads is a platform where people can come together and discuss everything from current excitement to upcoming trends.

The published screenshots show that Threads users will be able to post short text messages that, like Twitter, can be liked, commented on and shared with readers.

Twitter, for its part, is facing massive user churn after being acquired by billionaire Elon Musk, who laid off nearly half of the company's workforce and curtailed the rights of free account holders by insisting on signing up for the paid version of Twitter Blue.

The latest step in this direction has been to limit the number of tweets available to view for free accounts. TweetDeck, the popular Twitter control panel, is still available to all users, but Elon Musk promised to make it free within 30 days.

Judging by the screenshots of the new Threads app, the service will be completely free and will have no limits on the number of messages you can view.

Several Twitter-like apps have been launched over the past few years, such as Mastodon and Bluesky, but have failed to replicate its popularity.

Facebook Meta regularly borrows popular ideas from competitors. For example, the feature of disappearing messages after 24 hours (known as "Stories") first appeared on the Snapchat platform. It was subsequently copied by the developers of Instagram and then Facebook, and is the most popular feature in the Facebook Meta apps today.

According to the latest report, in the first quarter of this year, the total daily audience of all three Facebook Meta applications - Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp - was more than 3 billion people.
