One of the most famous representatives of the Scottish Lermontov family is the poet, singer and seer Thomas Lermont, who lived in the 13th century, also known as Thomas the Rhymer. Although it is impossible to say unequivocally whether he was a real person or just a hero of legends, his image had a noticeable impact on Scottish and not only culture. Captive lieutenant Georg Lermontov entered the service in Russia in the 17th century, converted to Orthodoxy and became Lermontov, and the poet Mikhail Lermontov is among his descendants. An ancestor of George Byron named Gordon in the 16th century was married to Margaret Lermont, which gave the poet reason to include Thomas the Rhymer in his family tree. Finally, Byron's poetry and moral world had a noticeable influence on Lermontov's work, and one can speak of their relationship not only in the literary, but also (hypothetically) in the literal sense.
