What is the difference between white rhinos and black rhinos?

Black and white rhinoceroses got such names unjustifiably - they can all be dark gray, and light gray, and brown. The error arose due to the fact that the British colonists took the Dutch "wijd" for the word "white" - "white", but it should have been "wide" - "wide", since this species has a wide mouth. And since white rhinos appeared, the species with a narrow mouth was called the black rhinoceros.

What is a complete examination?

The examination program, which gives a complete picture of the state of the body, should include:
  • medical history
  • clinical examination of the body
  • laboratory blood and urine tests
  • EKG at rest
  • advice to the examinee.
Such an examination is recommended every two years for those over 35.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Acoustic laser operating in multifrequency mode 04.08.2014

American scientists from the state of Maryland presented a development that allows you to control the multi-frequency mode of the acoustic laser.

The acoustic laser demonstrated by scientists has a resonator cavity with a special reflective membrane installed, which provides support for several oscillatory acoustic modes and is used as an output device. The device can also operate in multi-frequency (multi-mode) mode. It is noted that the researchers discovered the phenomenon of the so-called. "anomalous cooling", in which the device enters single-mode mode.

In this mode, a certain leading frequency (mode) of vibrations is allocated, which suppresses the amplification of other frequencies, and with which the amplification of acoustic vibrations is associated. Researchers have shown the ability to control multimode modes, incl. and for setting all the necessary parameters of the single-mode mode.

The scientists controlled the competing modes by adjusting the power of the optical pump: the larger it becomes, the more frequencies of acoustic oscillations appear, from which one leading one is released, suppressing the others.

Sazer, or acoustic laser - a sound analogue of the well-known laser - is an amplifier of sound vibrations of a certain frequency. The principle of operation of the device is similar to the operation of a laser. In this case, in an acoustic laser, in which optical pumping is used, the change in the frequency of photons occurs with the generation of phonons - i.e. quasiparticles, in terms of which it is convenient to describe sound vibrations. The work of a sather is related to Mandelstam-Brillouin scattering, in which the change in the frequency of reflected light occurs during the interaction of the incident radiation and the crystal lattice of a solid.

It is believed that directed beams of phonons from acoustic lasers can be used as switches for the electrical properties of certain materials, as well as for experiments with three-dimensional structures of solids.
