Those who use such lamps are well aware of their shortcomings. It seems that the light is good, and the illumination, but turn it on, and the buzz presses on your ears - this is the throttle. Yes, and they do not light up immediately, but for now the starter turns on, which, alas, is unreliable, and most importantly, these lamps also have a filament, and if it burns out, then the lamp has to be replaced with a new one.

The figure shows a circuit that allows not only to eliminate annoying shortcomings, but also to revive a lamp with a burnt out spiral.

Let's explain the diagram. Capacitors C1, C4 must be made of paper, with an operating voltage of 1,5 times the supply voltage. Capacitors C2, C3, it is desirable to take mica. Resistor R1 is necessarily wire-wound, selected according to the power of the lamp used.

Diodes VD2, VD3 and capacitors C1, C4 are a full-wave rectifier with voltage doubling. The values ​​of the capacitances C1, C4 determine the operating voltage of the L1 lamp (the larger the capacitance, the greater the voltage on the electrodes). At the moment of switching on, the voltage at points a and b reaches 600 V. But when it fires, it decreases and ensures normal operation.

Elephants on a treadmill 14.07.2003

Can elephants run, or do they simply walk at a fast pace if necessary? A group of Thai biologists studied the issue by running 42 Asian elephants on a treadmill.

A total of 188 races were held under the lens of television cameras. To make it possible to analyze the movements of the legs of thick-skinned giants on video frames, the joints were marked on the elephant skin with spots of white paint. The speed was recorded with a photo finish.

It turned out that elephants use something between fast walking and running. The order and mode of movement of the legs does not change, and there are no moments when all four legs leave the ground, as in typical running of other animals. On the other hand, when the elephant moves to a fast pace, the body's center of gravity begins to jump up and down, which is typical for running (when walking, the elephant's center of gravity shifts back and forth).

Many of the experimental animals reached speeds of 25 kilometers per hour, and three particularly nimble individuals exceeded it. This is the first time that such speeds have been recorded in elephants. The conclusion of zoologists: with some stretch, we can assume that elephants can run.

About 10 years ago, a 30W U-shaped fluorescent lamp stopped lighting up. I did not find it on sale, I collected the above scheme. Everything worked and worked until, for the sake of sports interest, I measured the consumed current, which turned out to be about 1A. Dancing with a tambourine in terms of selecting the capacitance of capacitors did not reduce the current consumption. So for every plus there is a minus, which is modestly silent.
