What did the American, who was considered by many to be the smartest man in history, achieve?

William James Sidis, an American born in 1898, could read the New York Times at the age of one and a half, knew eight languages by the age of eight and invented another one on his own, and at the age of 11 he entered Harvard, where a year later he lectured on four-dimensional bodies at math circle. His IQ has been estimated at 250-300, although these numbers may be exaggerated because Sidis never passed an IQ test. However, such an early start did not bring him fame - having received a bachelor's degree at the age of 16 and having worked for some time as a teacher, he retired from public life. Working as a simple accountant and in other unskilled positions, Sidis devoted himself to collecting and studying transportation systems, and sometimes published works in various fields of knowledge: anthropology, philology, cosmology, and Indian history.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What is asthma?

Asthma is not a disease per se, but a symptom of a number of other body disorders. In asthma, a person has difficulty breathing due to problems with the passage of air in and out of the lungs. The passage of air is hampered by inflammation of the mucous membrane or organs connecting the windpipe and lung.

During an asthma attack, a person develops shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing. The attack can be both sudden and develop gradually. The only way to get rid of asthma is to find the cause and eliminate it. The reasons may be different: allergies, emotional shock or weather conditions.

If asthma develops in a person before the age of 30, the cause is usually an allergy. The patient may be sensitive to pollen, to dust, to food, to drugs, to animals. There are many types of dust and pollen that can trigger asthma. In children, asthma is especially often caused by an allergy to food: eggs, milk or flour products. According to doctors, asthma often develops due to strong emotional unrest - for example, due to family quarrels, financial troubles, and other things.

Often emotional anxiety is caused by a feeling of own uselessness, unrequited love. These sensations set off a chain reaction that eventually ends in an asthma attack. This is why a doctor's diagnosis in determining the cause of asthma is very important. It will require a complete and thorough analysis of the patient's medical history, a variety of questions about eating habits, lifestyle, environment. And if even slight deviations from the usual way of life are revealed in the patient, the doctor will be able to determine the cause of the asthma attack.

An attack can happen after visiting acquaintances who keep animals of a certain breed, after visiting the beach or eating new foods. For people with asthma, a doctor often prescribes a special diet.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Detective on the phone 04.04.2001

In the Morse code era, radio operators easily recognized each other by the way they worked on the key. A reconnaissance radio operator, forced to work under the control of the enemy, could hint at his lack of freedom by slightly changing the features of his "handwriting".

Now in England, an artificial intelligence-based program has been created that can detect the individual characteristics of your use of a mobile phone and raise an alarm if these characteristics suddenly change. More than 15 cell phones are stolen every month in the UK alone. According to the Swedish firm Ericsson, phone companies lose 2 to 5 percent of their profits from calls made using stolen phones.

Researchers at the Intelligent Systems Laboratory at University College London have found that the numbers you dial, the pace you dial, the length of calls you make, the time you usually call somewhere, are individual traits that rarely change significantly.

The corresponding program running in the telephone network monitors these features of each subscriber and raises an alarm if they change: the phone may have been stolen. In case of violation of the characteristic features of calls, the program sends a text message to your device asking you to enter your personal digital code. If this is not done, the phone will turn off.

The program is smart enough to account for "normal" deviations from normal phone usage, such as unusually many calls, including calls to infrequently used numbers, on New Year's Eve.
