In which birds does intraspecific competition occur in the nests of other birds?

Birds of the species large honeyguide, although they do not belong to cuckoos, also lay eggs in other people's nests - their victims are mainly pygmy bee-eaters. Having thrown an egg, honeyguides prick other eggs in the nest with their beak, as a result of which some bee-eater chicks die immediately, while others hatch underdeveloped, which gives an advantage to parasitic chicks. Honeyguides try to lay eggs as close to bee-eater eggs as possible, but scientists have found that bee-eaters are completely indifferent to the appearance of eggs. It turned out that honeyguides compete with other individuals of their own species. Seeing bee-eater eggs in the nest that are unlike the rest of the eggs, they try to do more harm to them, so the closer the honeyguide eggs are to the original ones, the more likely the chicks are to survive.

When were wheeled bags invented?

The first patent for a bag with wheels was issued in the US only in 1972. The idea to connect them instead of using carts came from Bernard Sadow, vice president of a bag manufacturing company in Massachusetts. In his version, the product was supplied with four wheels, and it was necessary to pull it by a leather loop. And only in 1987, the pilot Robert Plath invented and patented the bag we are used to with a retractable handle.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

The ozone layer is recovering 31.10.2018

A report by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) states that actions taken under the Montreal Protocol have led to a reduction in the amount of substances that deplete the ozone layer in the atmosphere. At the moment, it is recovering at a rate of 1-3% per ten years, according to the UN website.

If the pace continues, the ozone layer should fully recover over the Northern Hemisphere by 2030, over the Southern Hemisphere by 2050 and over the poles by 2060.

The Montreal Protocol, signed on September 16, 1987, prohibits the production and sale of hazardous substances that deplete the ozone layer. Ozone protects the earth from ultraviolet radiation, which is the main cause of melanoma and other skin cancers. UNEP (United Nations Environment Program) believes that proper implementation of the Montreal Protocol will help prevent 2030 million cases of skin cancer by 2.
