Creation of strong magnetic fields by a pulse of laser light

06.04.2020

During the last decade or even two, strong magnetic fields have been used in many areas of science and technology, including materials science, medicine, and the like. However, the hardware that makes it possible to obtain such magnetic fields is far behind in development compared to the ever-increasing needs. Not so long ago, a research team from the University of Ottawa and some other Canadian scientific institutions found a new way to generate high-strength magnetic fields using pulses of laser light. Moreover, the same method makes it possible to "turn on and off" the magnetic field very quickly, which opens up a number of completely new prospects for its practical use.

The work done by Canadian scientists is based on the results of previous studies, which were aimed at using lasers to accelerate the process of generating a magnetic field. In these studies, pulses of laser light were used to drive electrons in a plasma in a circular path, but this approach requires the use of extremely powerful lasers, which are rare in themselves and are available only to a small number of laboratories worldwide.

During the new research, scientists used a laser beam not with vortex, as before, but with azimuth-vector polarization. The electric field in such a beam has the form of radial circles around the center of the beam, and this field causes the plasma electrons to move along an annular path, which generates a magnetic field directed along the direction of the laser light beam. To synchronize the movement of electrons, the light of the second laser is used, the frequency of which is twice as high as the frequency of the first, and this method makes it possible to achieve an accelerated movement of electrons at the moment of the peak of the electric field strength created by the light of the first laser.

The calculations performed showed that the main laser pulse with an energy of 11.3 microjoules and an additional pulse with an energy of 1.9 microjoules and a doubled frequency are able to generate a magnetic field with a strength of 8 Tesla, which will last for 50 femtoseconds. And the alternation of pulses will allow you to get a pulsed magnetic field, which will act almost constantly. However, if this approach is used to study the properties of magnetic materials, then the rapid switching on and off of such a strong magnetic field will most likely simply destroy the samples under study, and a number of additional protective measures will be required to prevent this.

However, in the form in which it exists today, the new laser method for generating strong magnetic fields can already be used in the fields of optoelectronics and spintronics to create high-speed keys and switches that ensure the operation of devices based on the mentioned technologies.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

The taste of fat 02.08.2015

Scientists from Purdue University in Indiana (USA) said that the taste of fat is unique and should be the sixth in the classification of basic tastes, along with sweet, bitter, sour, salty and umami.

During the experiments, the researchers tried to find out the taste of free fatty acids, which are the main building blocks of fats. To do this, the subjects limited their sense of smell with a clamp and were given to taste various substances in order to then classify them.

All participants in the test recognized the taste of fatty acids as special, but many found it difficult to describe: basically it was called bitter, unpleasant and repulsive. As a result, scientists have given the new unique taste its own name - oleogustus.

In pure form, the strong taste of fat signals to the brain that the product is unlikely to be edible, but in small concentrations, oleogustus enhances the taste sensation of certain types of food.
