Males of what animals in the process of reproduction do not disassemble, male or female in front of them?

Octopoteuthis deletron squids, living at depths of up to 800 meters, have a very short period of sexual maturity. Therefore, males have developed a breeding strategy in which they do not make out who is in front of them - a female or another male. Meeting in the dark a squid of their kind of any gender, they attack it and smear it with spermatophores, that is, capsules with spermatozoa.

What is an organism?

Scientists speak of all living beings as organisms. Man is also an organism, just like a mouse, a fish, an insect, a tree, a camomile, and so on. Organisms include bacteria and other tiny creatures. All these creatures have some common features. For this reason, scientists use the word "organism" to group together all living beings.

The word "organism" suggests that all these creatures are organized phenomena, that is, all their parts are arranged in a certain way and perform their function as part of the whole. To be considered alive, substances must be active. The activity of an organism can be chemical and occur within it.

Chemical activity is a constantly ongoing process. Without it, the body cannot live. Energy must be constantly supplied to the body so that it does not stop its activity. An organism is made up of matter and has its own form. Obsolete matter is constantly replaced by new. The exchange of matter and energy within an organism is called metabolism.

The organism grows until it reaches its full size. It must reproduce itself, that is, the old organisms must be replaced by new, young ones. Therefore, we can say that the organism is alive while it grows, reproduces and metabolism takes place in it.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

The Gulf Stream slowed down due to global warming 03.03.2021

Scientists have found that significant changes have taken place in the system of the Atlantic Gulf Stream, which bring heat to the territory of Europe.

We are talking not only about the current along the eastern coast of North America, but also about the entire system of Atlantic currents associated with it, affecting the northwestern coast of Africa, Western Europe, Scandinavia, the Barents Sea, and the Arctic Ocean. A study in the journal Nature Geoscience shows that the Gulf Stream has slowed to record levels over the past millennium.

Experts called the slowdown in the current sharp, as it happened contrary to all forecasts. At the same time, researchers associate this phenomenon with global climate change on the planet. Stefan Ramstorf from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research believes that the reason is anthropogenic influence on nature.

Over the past hundred years, the speed of the Gulf Stream has decreased by 15%. This has already affected the weather, in particular leading to more frequent heat waves in the south of Europe. Climatologists are concerned about this slowdown, because if the process continues, the circulation of the masses of water that form the climate in both hemispheres can be completely destabilized.

British Antarctic Survey oceanographer Andrew Meyers noted that before the onset of anthropogenic influence on climate, the overall system of the Gulf Stream was more stable. It is now being significantly affected by melting ice in Greenland and increased rainfall in North America.

"This indicates that the slowdown is likely not a natural change, but the result of human intervention," Meyers added. However, Tim Palmer, a climate scientist at the University of Oxford, believes that other factors also influence weather changes in Europe.

Accelerating the pace of global warming could eventually bring the Gulf Stream to a complete halt.
