What legend is associated with the choice of the length of the marathon distance in running?

According to legend, after the battle of Marathon, the Greek warrior Philippides ran to Athens to announce the victory of the Athenians over the Persians, and died from overexertion. And since the distance he covered was about 40 kilometers, it was this distance that they began to call the marathon. In fact, this legend has become a mixture of two different episodes. Philippides (according to other sources, Phidippides) ran a much greater distance in just a day - 225 kilometers from Athens to Sparta - to ask for military help. But the Athenians in the battle of Marathon eventually managed on their own, and then made a very fast forced march 40 kilometers to their city in order to prevent the other part of the Persian army sailing on the sea from there, and thereby consolidated their victory.

Why do visitors throw potatoes at the grave of the Prussian king?

On the grave of the Prussian king Frederick the Great, which is located in the Sanssouci palace and park complex in Potsdam, you can always see potato tubers. They are thrown by the Germans in gratitude for the fact that in the 18th century Frederick forced the peasants to grow this new fruit.

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Mobile data transfer at 10 Gbps 07.03.2013

NTT DoCoMo, Japan's leading mobile operator, and Tokyo Institute of Technology have been able to achieve mobile data rates of 10 Gbps, 100 times faster than current speeds available to consumers. This is the next step on the way to 5G networks.

The packets were transmitted in the direction from the subscriber system to the base station. The successful experiment was the next step on the way to fifth generation networks (5G), experts say. To conduct the test, the engineers used the 400 MHz band on the 11 GHz frequency band. The transmission was carried out from a car moving at a speed of about 9 km / h. The specified speed was achieved using Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) technology, which split the data into multiple streams. 8 antennas were used simultaneously for data transmission, and 16 antennas for reception.

The technologies on the basis of which the experimental system was built can also be used to transmit data in the direction from the base station to the subscriber system, also at a speed of 10 Gbps, the NTT DoCoMo press service emphasized. The speed achieved by NTT DoCoMo at 10 Gbps is 100 times higher than the speed of 100 Mbps - the maximum speed that the operator currently offers to its subscribers, the company added.

However, before the commercial implementation of new standards, engineers have to solve at least one difficulty. The fact is that the use of frequencies exceeding 5 GHz reduces the distance that the waves are able to travel, which is most important in densely built environments. Therefore, lower frequencies are used in modern networks, the company explained.
