Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Cota - technology for charging gadgets over the air 08.04.2015

The developers of Cota wireless charging technology, who spent 8 years on their brainchild, are ready to launch the development into mass production. Cota uses radio waves to transmit power and can charge all the devices in the house at the same time.

Startup Ossia has completed the development of Cota wireless charging technology and is ready to provide it to manufacturers of mobile devices and consumer electronics. The company expects that they will conclude the first contracts for the supply of Cota before the end of 2015, according to InfoWorld.

The development of the technology took 8 years, it was first introduced in 2013. Cota allows you to transfer energy to various electronic devices over the air using radio waves in the same frequency ranges that are used by Wi-Fi and Bluetooth standards.

For the Cota charger to work, it does not matter whether the device being charged lies or is in the pocket of the user, who is constantly moving around the room. The main thing is that this device is within a radius of 10 m from the energy transmitter.

The power transmitter is one of two components of Cota technology. The second component is the chipset, which must be placed in each device that needs to be transferred power. It can be a smartphone, tablet, laptop, smart watch, smoke detector, smart thermostat, etc. The company claims that the size of the chipset will allow it to be built into almost any modern device.

If the device is equipped with a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth antenna, then energy will be received using it. That is, for example, in the case of a smartphone, tablet and laptop, no additional components, in addition to the Cota chipset, will need to be built in. In the case of a thermostat, smoke detector, and other consumer electronics, an antenna will be required if one is not provided by the design.

The principle of operation of Cota is based on focusing the radio signal on the device being charged. This allows it to transmit a signal with a power of 1 W - a third of the power that a USB port provides to a mobile phone. And since the technology is based on a radio wave, devices do not have to be in direct line of sight from the transmitter, as, for example, in one of the Microsoft concepts.

"You don't have to put an energy transmitter in every room. Put it in one place and it will transmit energy to all devices in the house. It's like with Wi-Fi. If your device catches Wi-Fi, then it will receive energy," - Startup founder Hatem Zeine said.

The Ossia startup holds four key patents for Cota's technology in the US, Zane said.

Ossia engineers claim that the new technology is safe for humans - the power of the signal emitted by the energy transmitter is 10 times less than that of a Wi-Fi router.
