How are raisins made from grapes?

Raisins are small, very sweet grapes carefully dried in the sun. There are not many areas on earth where grapes are grown and raisins are produced. Because after the ripening of the grapes, a period of several weeks of hot weather without rain is necessary in order to be able to dry it. Such areas are part of the Mediterranean in Spain and Greece, the peninsula of Asia Minor, part of South Australia, where the necessary climate exists.

San Joaquin and the Sacramento Mountain Valley are ideal areas for producing raisins and supplying them to the world market. The dry season is from August to November. There is no rain, the weather is hot, and the nearby mountains are a source of water for irrigation for the entire period of grape ripening.

In California, grapes ripen in August. It is harvested from the branches and placed on trays between rows for 23 weeks. Then it is put into boxes and dried a little more. After that, the grapes are sent to packaging plants. Here the grapes enter the conveyor to go through all the processes that prepare them for delivery to the market. Special machines remove twigs and debris. Then the grapes are washed, dried and treated with special solutions, the external moisture evaporates again, and the product is packaged in bags.

In the manufacture of raisins, about 3/4 of the original weight of the grapes is lost. Seedless raisins are obtained from the kishmish grape variety. This grape is native to California.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

The brain is able to remember foreign words in a dream 19.06.2023

Recent studies by scientists at the University of Bern have confirmed an interesting feature of the brain: the ability to remember foreign words during sleep. The legend that sleep can promote more effective learning has received scientific support, although scientists remain skeptical of this claim. However, there is some evidence that the brain is able to process and store information received in certain phases of sleep.

Researchers have focused on slow wave sleep, especially its first phase. At this point, the brain goes through short periods of activity and recession that last about 30 seconds. A team of scientists led by Flavio Schmidig has developed an algorithm that predicts the exact timing of the next peak and fall of brain waves based on EEG data. This algorithm was used to conduct experiments on 30 volunteers who slept in the laboratory and were native German speakers.

During the experiment, volunteers were played short two-syllable words. One word sounded in their one ear in German, and the "translation" of this word, which is a random collection of syllables that do not exist in reality, sounded in the other ear. This approach excluded the possible influence of previous acquaintance with foreign languages. Half of the volunteers listened to these words during peaks in brain activity, and the other half during periods of recession. In total, each word was played four times, and the choice of words covered three categories: animals, places, and instruments.

After 12 hours, the effectiveness of this training was tested. The volunteers were again played the "translated" word and asked to assign it to one of three categories. As expected, with a random response, the probability of the correct choice was about 33 percent, and this is exactly the result of the group that listened to the words during the peaks of brain activity. The second group, which listened to the words during periods of recession, scored slightly higher at 37 percent, which is almost no different from random guessing. However, when rechecked 24 hours later, this group performed better, reaching 41 percent correct answers.

Statistical analysis confirmed that these results cannot be a simple random phenomenon. The researchers concluded that memory actually occurs when words are recalled during short bursts of brain activity during the initial period of deep sleep. However, the effect of this memorization turned out to be moderate, and its significance in learning remains relatively small. Rather, it demonstrates the very fact that the brain is able to perceive and store new information during sleep, but it is unlikely that this will be a significant help in the educational process.
