Why did Robin Hood get such a nickname?

According to legend, Robin Hood took from the rich and distributed the loot to the poor. However, the nickname Hood does not mean "good" at all, as it might seem at first glance, because in English it is written Hood and translates as "hood, hide with a hood" (which is a traditional element of Robin Hood's clothing).

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What weighs more - the food consumed by a person per day, or the air that he inhales over the same period of time?

The weight of air inhaled and exhaled by a person during the day is easy to calculate.

With each breath, a person introduces about half a liter of air into their lungs. This is done on average 16 times per minute. This means that in one minute about 8 liters of air manage to visit the body. This is approximately 480 liters per hour, and 11 liters per day. This volume of air at normal pressure weighs about 500 kilograms.

Thus, per day, a person passes through his body much more air than food: on average, during this time, the body consumes about 3 kilograms of food (solid and liquid). However, if we take into account that the inhaled air consists of 4/5 nitrogen, which is useless for breathing, it turns out that the daily weight of its remaining components is approximately equal to the daily weight of the food consumed.

The given estimates are a convincing argument in favor of the need for fairly frequent air renewal in a residential area.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Wind turbines can cause local warming 15.10.2018

A group of scientists from Harvard University tried to assess the likely consequences of the spread of wind energy in its currently available manifestations - wind farms. This is the name of wind power plants, including a fair amount - tens and hundreds - of windmills.

Scientists have tried to mathematically model the situation in which all the electricity consumed by the United States is produced by wind turbines. To do this, with a good location of installations, their number should be about 16 times more than the current one. The model was built on the basis of real data on existing wind turbines.

As its subsequent application showed, rational, from the point of view of energy, the placement of wind farms promises a redistribution of air flows, as a result of which the average temperature in the installation areas will increase by 0,24 degrees Celsius.

At the same time, the long-term impact of wind energy installations on the climate still remains favorable, since they will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere.
