Why is one of the most popular toys named after US President Theodore Roosevelt?

In 1902, US President Theodore Roosevelt was out hunting. He was offered to shoot a bear driven by dogs, half-killed and tied to a tree. Roosevelt refused under the pretext that it was unsportsmanlike, but ordered the bear to be killed to end his torment. This story in the form of cartoons hit the newspapers, but then was softened, and the entrepreneurs launched the production of teddy bears, which received the name "Teddy Bear" in honor of the president. Soon these plush toys became one of the most popular and remain so to this day.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Can the virus be seen?

A virus is a microscopic organism that causes disease. It cannot be detected with an ordinary microscope. But this does not mean that science does not have the opportunity to study the structure of the virus. Today there are ultramicroscopes that make it possible to see microorganisms. Science is able to determine the size and types of viruses using an electron microscope.

The electron microscope uses the glow of electrons instead of light rays. The electrons passing through the sample are observed and recorded on a photographic plate, on which the image appears. Therefore, it is possible to increase objects up to 100 thousand times. Using an electron microscope, it was possible to find out that the size of viruses ranges from 300 to 10 millimicrons.

What is a millimicron? It's 1/1000 of a micron.

A micron is 0,00001 millimeters. No one knows for sure what viruses are. Some scientists think they are close relatives of bacteria. Other researchers believe that viruses are similar to elementary particles close to genes. Still others believe that viruses are in the middle between living and non-living matter.

We know that viruses can only grow and multiply in living tissue. This means that they cannot be cultivated outside of living matter, and this makes it difficult to study the properties of their growth. Therefore, they are classified according to their ability to infect living cells and according to the reaction that they cause in the body of animals or humans. Do viruses produce poisons and toxins? It is now recognized that they produce toxins, but the toxins and parts of the viruses cannot be isolated. And we still don't know how these toxins cause disease, if they do!

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Solar flare prediction 31.08.2012

Scientists at Purdue University may have discovered a new method for predicting solar flares more than a day before they occur. In this way, early warning of danger can be obtained and satellites, astronauts and Earth's infrastructure can be protected from potentially dangerous radiation. The new warning system analyzes differences in gamma radiation that is emitted when atoms of radioactive elements decay. This decay rate is believed to be constant, but recent research results cast doubt on this claim.

Scientists have put forward a hypothesis that the rate of radioactive decay changes under the influence of solar activity, possibly due to the flow of subatomic neutrino particles from the Sun. This was hinted at when, in 2006, researchers found that the decay rate of a radioactive sample changed little in the 39 hours before the onset of a large solar flare. Since then, scientists have carefully studied similar changes in the rate of decay before and after solar flares, as well as during the rotation of the Earth around the Sun, the rotation of the Sun itself, and fluctuations in solar activity.

The results of work in two different laboratories showed clear annual changes in the rate of decay of radioactive isotopes of chlorine-36. At the same time, the highest decay rate was observed in January and February, the lowest - in July and August. Observational data from July 2005 to June 2011 were used. The annual fluctuations are explained simply: when the Earth is further away, it receives fewer solar neutrinos and the decay rate slows down a bit. When the Earth approaches the Sun or there is a solar flare, the number of neutrinos increases and decay accelerates.

It should be noted that the role of neutrinos in this phenomenon is only a hypothesis. Since neutrinos have virtually no mass and charge, physicists believe that they do not interact with other particles. So other, unknown particles can also be the reason for fluctuations in the decay rate.

This discovery allows the development of a new method for predicting solar flares. At the same time, there is no need to launch expensive equipment into space - the corresponding detector can be built on Earth.
