Why does the BMW logo show an airplane propeller?

The BMW logo is inherited from its "parent" company Rapp Motorenwerke, and the circle segments were painted white and blue because these colors are symbolic of Bavaria, where the production is located. Later, BMW marketers came up with a legend that the logo depicts a stylized white propeller of an airplane cutting through the blue sky. The fact is that initially BMW was created for the production of aircraft engines and only 10 years later it began producing cars.

Where would you go for a good sip of ozone?

Don't bother going to the coast. The cult of healthy sea air, so popular in the XNUMXth century, was based on an elementary misunderstanding. The invigorating, salty taste has nothing to do with ozone, an unstable and very dangerous gas.

Ozone was discovered in 1840 by the German chemist Christian Schönbein. Investigating the peculiar smell that arose near the working electrical equipment, the scientist discovered a hitherto unknown gas O3 and named it after the Greek ozein ("smell").

Ozone, or "heavy air", has won great favor among medical scientists, who still cannot free themselves from the grip of the "miasmatic" theory of disease. The essence of this theory lies in the fact that the deterioration of human health allegedly arises from bad smells. Ozone, as it was believed, is exactly what is needed to cleanse the lungs of harmful "stench", and the sea coast is just the place where you can get it in abundance.

Over time, an entire industry has grown up around "ozone treatment" and "ozone hotels" (in Australia you can still find hotels with a similar name). Up until 1939 the seaside resort of Blackpool boasted "the healthiest ozone in Britain".

Today we know that the sea coast does not smell of ozone - it smells of rotten algae. There is no evidence that such a smell is good for health or, conversely, harmful (after all, the main component in its composition is sulfur). Perhaps it just evokes positive associations in the human brain, evoking memories of the happy days of childhood holidays.

As for ozone, the gases from your car's tailpipe (combined with sunlight) create far more ozone than anything found on a beach. And if you really feel the urge to fill your lungs with ozone, the best thing is to suck on the exhaust pipe. Which we personally do not recommend doing. Not only will you cause irreparable damage to your lungs, but you will also burn your lips badly.

Ozone is used to make bleach and to kill bacteria in drinking water as a less toxic alternative to bleach. Among other things, it is produced by high-voltage electrical equipment such as televisions and copiers.

Ozone is also emitted by some trees - for example, oak or willow - which can poison the surrounding vegetation.

The gradually depleting ozone layer that protects our planet from harmful ultraviolet radiation would inevitably cause death if inhaled. The ozone layer is located 24 km from the surface of our planet and smells vaguely reminiscent of geraniums.

Nanowires for silicon photonics 24.04.2014

IBM developers have succeeded in creating gallium arsenide nanowires that have properties useful for silicon photonics.

Today, work with elements from groups III-V of the periodic system is considered as one of the possibilities for ensuring further progress in the development of semiconductor technologies.

The most commonly used of these groups are gallium and indium arsenide alloys. These alloys are distinguished by high electron mobility and can be used as a basis for various tunneling effects, which implies the ability to operate at very low energy levels.

The IBM division in Zürech has been able to exploit other interesting properties of these alloys. IBM developers have created sections on an ordinary silicon wafer that include nanowires of mechanically strained gallium arsenide. By changing the mechanical load on the nanowires (compressing and stretching them), it was possible to achieve such a change in the electrical properties of the "wires" that they either emitted photons or absorbed them.

This property is well suited, for example, to create a so-called. silicon photonics, when optical transceivers are built directly into processors and controllers. In this case, it is possible to change the radiation spectrum by dosing the mechanical load, thereby compacting the data transmission channel.
