Why does a bull in a bullfight attack not a matador, but a red cape?

A bull in a bullfight attacks a matador's red cloak, called a muleta, not at all because red color irritates him - after all, cows do not distinguish colors. In fact, the bull reacts to movement when the bullfighter swings the muleta. And red was historically chosen to make the bull's blood less noticeable.

Who first reached the South Pole?

Roald Amundsen, a Norwegian polar explorer, was the first to reach the South Pole by hoisting the Norwegian flag on December 14, 1911.

On January 17, 1912, an English expedition led by Robert Falcon Scott arrived at the Pole - to their greatest disappointment, to see the flag hoisted by Amundsen.

The expeditions reached the Pole by various routes and were equipped differently. Amundsen took the shorter route. Along the way, he set up camps with enough provisions for the return. As a vehicle, he used a sleigh drawn by Eskimo dogs, accustomed to extreme climatic conditions.

Unlike the Norwegians, the British went to the Pole on a motor sled, and the dogs were taken only in case the sled failed. The sleigh quickly broke down, and there were too few dogs. The polar explorers were forced to leave part of the cargo and harness themselves to the sled. The track Scott walked along was 150 kilometers longer than Amundsen's. On the way back, Scott and his companions died.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Smart air pollution sensor IKEA VINDSTYRKA 16.02.2023

Swedish furniture giant IKEA has unveiled a smart sensor to track indoor air pollution.

"The new VINDSTYRKA air quality sensor measures and monitors indoor pollutant levels, complementing IKEA's existing range of smart solutions for better indoor air quality," the company said.

According to company spokesman Henrik Telander, VINDSTYRKA is committed to creating an affordable, high-performance air quality sensor to help customers become more aware of the quality of the air they breathe in their homes.

"We take it for granted that the air in our homes is clean, but small daily activities like cooking or cleaning can degrade air quality just as much as industry or traffic," he added.

The most harmful pollutants, particulate matter (PM2,5), cannot be seen with the naked eye. VINDSTYRKA has a display showing the level of these parts, humidity, temperature. When connected to DIRIGERA, the smart hub of smart products, the sensor allows you to read the level of indoor air quality in the IKEA Home smart app.

VINDSTYRKA will be available in all IKEA markets from April 2023.
